I've had this phone for over 2 years and it's still a great phone but not as fast as it used to be.

Can someone explain modding an Android to make it faster and is it safe to do?

Don't want to mess up the phone and lose everything!

Recently found out about custom ROMs.

Can it be done on this model?

I have one as a backup phone, and I think I have it as blinged out as possible!
I have a cyanogenmod based froyo (Android 2.2) on it - (flash not supported on the cpu before you ask),
so I have wifi tethering and all of those features. I use it as a mobile wifi hotspot regularly.
A lot faster than it was with eclair (2.1).

Rooting it for the first time is a little slow, but after that you can just load up ROMs from your SD card until you find what you like.

It's been discussed here before, so if you do a bit of a search you'll find the links.
If you can't I'll help you with a few pointers and links some other time.

samdroid was the focus of developing, but the guy who did most of the spica builds
doesn't use one anymore, so it seems to be final. There was an experimental gingerbread which looked great, but the camera didn't work so I went back to froyo.
