If you could list all of your favourite artists/bands emerging from the music scene at the moment who would they be? and what genre would you put them in? at least your top five.

It's unclear what you mean by 'today's main artists' and how this relates to emerging acts. If they are a 'main' artist well then I presume that they are already one of the most popular acts in indie and alternative music and therefore not an emerging, up and coming act.

As regards genres, well, who really cares. We don't need people putting artists into the most specific genres imaginable.

Yeah I see I'm not making myself clear. What I meant by main is like...artists/bands that have just come out in the last two years that you liked. they do not have to be ''mainstream charts'' thats not what my initial post was about.

In your comment on Genres....Could you imagine going in looking for a band in a music shop and just being at a loss because you cant find them because they dont slot them into their genres? but oh,......you will find them of course in the ''country section'' or folk section. Genres are important as they let people know what it is they are listening to beforehand. Perhaps not important to you but I find it to be quite useful.

Why do you not need to put artists in Genres? I'm interested in that.

OP give an example of how you would answer your own question.

Also if it's a more general overview of acts and music then the general music forum might be better suited.

Personally i hate genres, keep it nice and simple and file everything alphabetically.

I agree that it's useful to separate music in broad terms, similar to way the music forums on this site are laid out for example.
    I mean:

    Alternative & Indie
    Classical
    Hip Hop
    Jazz & Blues
    Rock & Metal
    etc

is fairly comprehensible by most standards, and that is certainly helpful.

However, two problems abound, particularly in recent decades:
    1) There are many more "crossover" genres, meaning someone might be confused regarding whether to file (for example) Rage Against the Machine under Rock/Metal or Hip Hop. And people spend too much time debating where it should fit, rather than actually discussing more interesting and engaging issues.
    2) Subgenres and crossover genres are often now described to the point where each individual band could nearly have a unique genre, thus no grouping occurs, and the whole thing becomes erroneous.

Overall, referring to something as "Alt.folk-screamo/epic doom-nintendocore" is just ****ing annoying.
