Great to see events like this on. where is €55 going though, rip off? there appears to be an option to make a donation to the charity partners on top of the entry fee. warrior of the sea in sligo is a 6km swim and costs €30

55 euro is a bit steep but hopefully some of the money could go to waterways ireland, who are sponsering the event, who do a lot of good work managing, maintaining, developing and restoring inland navigable waterways throughout the country

yeah but they're already funded 100% by british and irish governments. lot of money for a swim which can't be justified by the costs involved in actually running it.

How long would it take to train for the 5k. Is it possible to train for it for september. I can currently do 1.5k in the swimming pool..

I 'd love to try the 5K swim, but, as kala85 has asked, is it realistic for me to aim at this in 7-8 weeks?

I currently swim 2-3 times per week, 1600m each time, and have previously swam about 5 1500m triathlon swims and my longest open water swim was 1900m last year for a half iron tri.

I'm going to start upping training distances now with a view to taking part, and I guess I should know myself in a few weeks if its working out, but maybe the more experienced swimmers here could offer their opinions in whether this is too much too soon?

    Hi Folks,
Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations of any relatively safe lakes close to dublin/wicklow that would be suitable for training for this? I know blessington is off limits and apparently glendalough can get people into a spot of bother, but i don't have much familiarity with lakes in this neck of the woods so any tips on good places to train would be appreciated, thanks :)

i'd like to do this swim but the compulsary wetsuit is putting me off in a big way
i don't own 1 and it is an expensive swim without having to fork out for a wetsuit just to do it

According to the 5km information page, (You have the choice of swimming in a Wetsuit or without)

    http://i3swim.ie/events/5km-swim/

I'll be interested in doing the swim in togs, if togs are not allowed, won't be doing the swim. Water in September will be warm, no need for compulsory wetsuits.

Why are wet suits compulsory? They are not compulsory for the 5k. So if its for safety reasons then they must expect entries mostly from weak swimmers which contradicts the safety reason. My only conclusion is that they are trying to maximise entries (at 55yoyos a pop:eek:) from the casual swimmer with a wet suit. At least in a triathlons the organisers have a fair bit of organisation to do such as boats marshalls feeding stations security at transition road closures electronic timing etc etc
Lets be clear all the organisers have to do here is lay on a rib or two and get some canoeist club to cover the swimmers. Total rip off. Leinster branch SI organise open water events all summer at 10 euro a swim. Nuff said.
As for wet suit swimming well thats another story. IMO they are floatation aids which separate you from your environment and prevent you from swimming correctly and prevent you from improving your swimming. Like having a bath with your drawers on.
It is great to see open water events like this appearing but let it be for real swimming and not this sham of floating while moving your arms - i.e. swimming in a wet suit.

If I were to cut an aldi wetsuit to the knee and the shoulder would I get away with it?
I haven't enough training done for a 5k but I don't actually need a wetsuit to swim a mile either
I'm working the weekend of the Thomond swim, otherwise I wouldn't bother with this one

Butchering a substandard watersports wetsuit would probably make it even worse, a swimming specific suit is the only way to go.
