Recession? What Recession?

Apologies first if this is posted in the wrong forum, but here goes.

I thought there was supposed to be a recession on - what with small tradesmen saying work has falled off and no-one is hireing them. Well, I need some decorating done in my home which I cant manage myself - painting a stairwell plus hallway and landing area. I called three decorators for a quote - one quoted me over the phone, the other two said they needed to see the job first and so I arranged a date and time for them to call. Neither of them turned up on the days arranged so I called the one who gave me a quote, and he said would call with a colour-chart and arrange a day to do the job. He never turned up either!

Has anyone else had this problem or am I just unlucky. So here goes trying to find more decorators.

A lot of these tradesmen are still living in the tiger days when prices only went up and they could chose to do only jobs on new builds where they'd make a couple of grand no problem.

They still have their nose in the sand when it comes to facing up to the fact that these jobs are the only ones around for them now

    thats ... thats interesting.
Like, if 1 out of those 3 just never calls back you could sum him up as a chancer or something. But all 3? your job sounds pretty straight forward. nothing unusual or awkward about it.

    Probably the most likely cause.
But even then you'd think they'd still take what they can get. Like if a tradesmen is on the social now, you'd definitely think he'd do the odd job as a nixer.

    its crazy alright.

Don't you know OP some won't get out of bed for less then €200 a day.

As said, they want the new build jobs and the contract work in estates and apartment blocks which is a guaranteed few thousand euro

They don't want the small maintenance jobs but then they can't put on the poor mouth if they are turning down work.
Your job OP sounds very straight forward but probably too small for these boyos

Tradesmen you just can't trust them. could you not paint it yourself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,034 ✭✭✭Ficheall

You could probably invite a bunch of AHers around to do it for ya.
They've got time on their hands.

Although you'd have to paint the walls to make look like a boards.ie page. 'twould be cool. Maybe...

In all fairness, you can't price a job like that unless you see it. As for not turning up.... fuck them... there's plenty of other people that will do the job instead...

Painting is a fucking pain in the hole.

I'm surprised anyone does that as a job.

LOL. Just had a mental image of a small builder saying things have gotten so bad I can't even afford enough sand to have my head stuck in it.

    Cheers Daegerty.

you answered your own question :pac:
its a pain in the hole so people pay other people to do it for them. When there is a need for a service theres a job :pac:

I know. I'm trying to hire at the minute & can't find people to do the job... too much recession depression, too much to lose from not being on the dole & people just being fucking lazy.

€5 grand to spend on 3 months of work & no-one wants to do it.

In all fairness, the cost of living hasn't gone down so these lads still need to be paid a decent wage. Just because there is a recession on dosnt mean they need to do it for buttons.

Or perhaps there is a smell or something wrong with you and they don't wnt to come back or perhaps it won't be worth the time.

I'd say it's more likely that the majority of them have learned their trades in building sites on big projects and when it comes to small home jobs they don't have the skill or equipment or insurance.

Have you upset any tradesmen before or not paid some? word spreads fast and maybe your blacklisted!

Were they Irish painters you tried to get prices from?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,474 ✭✭✭Crazy Horse 6

I dunno i put an add on a well known website for a carpenter to put together a log cabin for me and within 4-5 hours had several ringing me and all wanted to do the job.

    Problem solved.

I found a painter and decorator (I asked around and he was recommended by a friend). He came to see what needed to be done, gave me a reasonable price and turned up on the day arranged. I was pleased with the finished job.

In answer to a previous poster - he wasnt put off by my accent as he turned out to be a Londoner himself!
