Driving Uk car in Ireland

I am currently a student from Northern Ireland who will be on a 14month placement in Dublin starting next month. As I am a foreign student, I am exempt from having to change to irish license plates(or vrt) for the duration of my studies(which I hope also means placement as it is hands on learning). I will probably be staying in Dublin Sun night to Fri morning, and go home for the weekends

I'm finding it hard to find whats best for me to do car wise, I would like to buy a uk car and bring it into the republic under uk plates and I was wondering if anyone knew of any uk insurance companies that have more than 3months European cover? Or are there any insurance companies in Ireland that insure UK cars?

Your 3 months "resets" every ime you go back home. So every weekend the clock starts again.

All of UK insurance companies are legally required to provide you with unlimited third party cover in every EU country for the whole period of your policy.
Only what they can limit is addition covers like fire, theft, own car damage, windscreen, etc.).

Axa in the UK have done it for me previously. They charged a 25% loading on top of the premium for it though.

If you use a comparison site such as confused.com or comparethemeerkat.com (couldn't resist that one), you'll be able to see this as a component of your quotes. I have two cars and regularly bring both to Ireland. One is with Quinn which has a single style policy for all UK and Ireland with the two countries described as the territorial limit (i.e. you're fully insured). The other just doesn't limit it within the EU but I would not recommend them (although I've renewed with them twice).

I think the problem with this is your insurance quote will be based on an address in the UK, but if your car spends 5 days of the week in Dublin the insurance company could wriggle out of a claim as the car is not kept at the insured address for the majority of the period.
