OK.....finances are gone down the tubes.

I am looking for a diesel. Budget of about €8k Anything from 2008 on to avail of the lower tax rates.

I have a large car now and need something with a bit of space. I was looking at a 2008 Vectra SRI (150bhp or 120bhp) Can anybody tell me if I would be mad to buy one or would it be a sensible choice?

    For instance:

The Vectra 150 is reckoned to be a fine car.
Looking at that one on Carzone,
It looks to me like thee is a lot of wear going on in the drivers footwell area. It also appears to me ( and my old eyes) that the clutch pedal seems to be a long way up.. Could point to a failing clutch ??

somebody may correct me on that.
Personally i would be wary of it.
Would you not go older and petrol if cash flow is the issue?
Plenty of '03 vectra GTS on the market.
1.8 petrol and fairly good on the juice.

The reasons I would be looking at 2008 is both the lower tax rates and hopefully reliability. I would also like to go up the years too if possible.

I haven't got it in front of me but a couple of years ago I was looking at importing something in this class. As far as I can remember the vectra was in a higher Tax band than the mondeo.
I think that certain models of the mondeo just slipped under one of the emissions bands.
I can't remember offhand what the difference was but it would make a difference to your yearly motor tax bill.
Just talking about diesels here as that is what I was looking for at the time.

€302 per annum for the Vectra....

    I assume the mondeo 1.8tdci sneek in @ €156?

    08 Mondeo 1.8 TDCi is €302, 2.0 TDCi is €447.

    Hey,

I have a 2007 Saab with the same engine as the Vectra, it's the 16v 150bhp.

although it has not suffered major problems so far, I'm not reassured for the future. An Opel specialist close to me maintains it and has told me to expect the following: -
    - EGR (already)
    - DPF (shelf life of 100k mls and €1k +)
    - injectors
    - DMF

Zafiras/Vectras are failing with these all the time.

Pump your money into a Mondeo, in my experience Ford are making top cars these days. Often alot better than cars twice the price!

So are the Mondeo DPF's longer lasting or cheaper to replace or what?

I would be hoping to find a car with around 60-70k anyway. I am confident that there are a few with full history out there to be found.

I can't attest to the longevity of a Ford DPF cos I've never had one so equipped, but if they're built (and handle) like the remainder of the car you shouldn't be short changed.

I've run 2 fords an 02 Mondeo (to 159k mls) and more recently an 06 CMAX tdci (to 100k). Both were the ford engines (2.0 and 1.8) and both engines took nothing more than oil/fuel/air filters over those mileages (cmax did get a t-belt) - I wouldn't regard myself and good to service on time. Tends to revolve around when I have the money than when the indicator flashes!!!

Try get a 2.0 Mondeo with the cambelt changed, also the emission levels vary on the 2.0 depending on the year you get. 07 had a higher C02 output than 09 models.

Incidentally on the Opel/Saab DPF thing, he maintains alotta Zafira/Vectras for cab drivers who refuse point-blank to shell out for new DPF's. He normally bypasses the DPF with regular pipe and and remaps the ECU accordingly (think ECU squirts fuel into DPF to burn off soot). HE quoted 500 quid for the job, about half DPF replacement. He guarantees no emission problems for NCT either.

I'm sure the same thing can be done for other DPF equipped cars.

Stick with mondeo, I'm regretting having an apparently nicer badge distract me!

    Mondeo 1.8 TDCi doesn't have a DPF.

    OK I did it.

Went and bought a Black UK Vectra Sri 1.9CDTi 150bhp with SatNav and 71000 miles.

After VRT it cost about 8500yoyo.

It checked out fine on the history/background checks and it has fsh.

Will see how we get on reliability wise and keep you posted.

Forgot to mention that the VRT cost was €1750 and the Tax is €302 per annum.
