I've been unable to root my Desire S using SuperOneClick or Unrevoked and I've also tried following The Always Up-To-Date Guide to Rooting Any Android Phone.

    Anybody successfully rooted this phone?

    Is your Desire S S-On (locked bootloader ) or S-Off (unlocked bootloader ) ?

    If it's S-on (locked bootloader ) you can't root it .

There is a software unlock for the bootloader being worked on at the moment - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136276

    Hope this helps

How can I tell if the bootloader is locked?

My google-fu fails me, I've searched and lots of sites mention s-on / s-off but none go into detail.

Also, if the bootloader isn't locked, whats the best process?

    Thanks in advance,

    Thanks in advance,

    Turn off the phone .
Hold down the volume down button , while pressing the power button to turn it back on , and it'll bring you to the bootloader screen .
At the top of the screen it'll say something like "SAGA PVT SHIP S-ON" , this means the bootloader is locked .

If it says S-Off , you have an unlocked bootloader .

I haven't looked at rooting mine yet , I'm waiting for the unlocked bootloader to become available .

Here's a link to the Desire S section on XDA Developers

A quick search came up with this -
How to Root a Desire S

(Don't blame me for any damage to your phone , I just added the links !! )

I actually tried that yesterday (found info on lifehacker) and today again after you suggested but this doesn't work for me. My phone just boots as normal... is it possible that the process is different on Desire S?

    Works on mine ( desire S )

Go to the power settings and untick quickboot .

When it's ticked , the phone doesn't turn off , it goes to standby not fully powered off .

Then turn off , then turn on the phone while holding down the volume down button

I'm locked, There doesn't seem to be as much work done on the Desire S as there was on previous HTC phones, I suppose the Incredible S and the Sensation came out and they are more higher end,
