I'm hoping to get a new iMac soon but am having trouble finding out the following:

Is it possible to get an adapter that will allow me to plug a HDMI device like a PS3 into it and use it as a HD TV?

Not with the 21.5-inch. But it used to be possible with previous 27-inch models using a very expensive third party HDMI to mini-DisplayPort convertor and with mixed results. However, afaik this will no longer work on the newer models and some kind of thunderbolt convertor is needed which currently doesn't exist.

Overall I'd recommend forgetting about the idea. It's not worth the hassle and expense. The iMac is not designed to be used as an external display with anything other than a Mac.

That's a bit of a pain in the ass. Plan on using it as a TV and computer in my sitting room.
    Gonna go for the 27".

I'd think twice about using it as a television. There are better and far cheaper alternatives. You can get 42-inch HDTV for €500.

Are you planning on doing anything graphically intensive on the iMac? If not, I'd go the TV + Mac Mini route in your situation.

I've done it the other way round. I got a HDMI adapter going from my Imac to my HD TV so can use the computer while sitting on the couch!
