I know it murders the battery but sports tracker is on the app store now free. It was excellent on my old nokias but haven't tried it on iPhone. It might be better than imapmyride maybe?

Have map my ride, sports tracker on mine but they are not worth using as you say they rinse your battery which virtually makes them useless !!

Buy a Bryton if you really need / want something that maps !!

They're very good and not as pricey as Garmin.

I use run keeper and set it for cycling, works great its hard on the battery but you would still get a good few hours of use from a fully charged phone (mines an iPhone 4 so battery is better then 3GS)

Imo Cyclemeter is the best app that you can get for tracking your cycle. It gives you all the info that you need and no laptop required to analyse your spin after your done like mapmyride. Great app:)
I did a 5hr spin and my phone (Iphone4) still had 30% left!

If you're concerned about battery life get one of these.
    http://www.duracell.ie/en-IE/product/2-in-1-usb-charger.jspx

If effectively doubles your battery life and if you have a ruck sack/saddle bag it'll fit fine in there with your phone and you GPS signal should be fine. I can get 2-3 hours out of my 3GS on normal battery and with this it gives me about 6 hours, Also you can get it for €3.95 in tesco :)

I use Everytrail as I want to see elevation while on the road. Also useful when offroading.

Mapmyride didn't seem to allow me to see the altitude when out on the road, only review the stats when I uploaded. (Maybe it's in the new version??)

Battery life on the Everytrail is good for at least 5 hours even with music on at the same time (Iphone4)

This has turned into a good thread. Thanks everyone.

Just read the app store details of cyclemeter. Looks like it's been hacked

I presume you can just use a car gps to track speed, routes, distance also?

I've been using Sports Tracker since it was Nokia Sports Tracker. Used to have a mount for my N97 so I could see what was going on. Unfortunately that broke, so now I just keep it in the back pocket.

A good way to conserve battery life is to switch the phone to offline mode. The GSM/3G radios consume a lot of battery power. Before I started using offline mode, I could get about 4 or 5 hours from a full charge before the battery died. Now, I can get the same tracking time and still have around half charge left. That's also while using the Polar Bluetooth HRM.

And the Android version is currently in closed beta and should be available shortly wink.gif

I am not sure if they can, but all of the car GPSs I have seen have been fairly large, and also I don't think they would like the rain too much.

Just a note on this: getting a GPS lock can take much much longer when in off-line mode as the GPS radio also uses GSM Cell information to find your initial position. If you try off-line mode and are wondering what is happening, just wait.

Perhaps you can go off-line after getting a GPS lock in the application to speed things up?

i find it near impossible to get lock in off line mode but to conserve battery ( using nokia ) i switch it to 2g only, most i've done is 6hrs and had some battery power left

i use sportstracker though, find it very good.i dont have iphone but downloaded the app to my itouch and looks well, syncs up to to your online profile so you can see all the history as i've been using sportstracker now for nearly 3 yrs.
