1971 Central Bank Decimal Coin Set

    Hi all

I bought a set of coins yesterday.

They are a set of Irish decimal coins -
    Halfpenny
    1 Pence
    2 Pence
    5 Pence
    10 Pence
    50 Pence

in a green plastic folder, marked "1971 Polished Coins"

There is a nice double-sided card in the folder detailing
the background of the issue of decimal coins in Ireland.

They are in great condition, but I was wondering, are these
uncirculated coins or "polished" ones that were in circulation?

If they are polished, this significantly reduces their value, I believe.

No no no, they are both uncirculated and polished proofs. The blank flans are highly polished to give a mirror finish and then after that they were struck. Remember that if they had been polished after being struck, then all the details would have been worn away, but as you can see they are sharp.

They don't really have a huge value though as there was lots of them minted.

I did't think they'd be worth loads, it says on the card that 50,000
    were minted.

They are lovely though, I'll never have to buy specimens of
the featured coins again, I have a "definitive" set at last!

Now all I need are the 20p / £1 coin and I'll be a happy camper.

If you're talking about the proofs of the decimal series, you probably mean the 50p millennium and 2x £1 coins (1990 & 2000)?

There's a lot more out there to collect, once you get into it, it just keeps going on and on....

True, I like Irish coins and all but I feel myself being drawn to collecting
Eastern Bloc / Soviet coins. This was a most interesting period in
history, and one I remember ending in the late 80's / early 90s.

Again owla, please do not resurrect these old threads. Start your own if you have a particular relevant question or use some of the existing stickies if they fit with your query. Thread locked.
