Wouldn't recommend Berlin on your own. I love the city, have bee 3 or 4 times but Berliners are not the type you can just go up and start conversation and start drinking with.

And Poland wouldn't really suit either.

How long are you thinking of going for? What's your budget?

Try some group tour. I did a few years back through the Middle East with Kumuka. Twas amazing. Ye get the best of both worlds- alone when you want to be, a bunch of people to chat to and have the laugh otherwise. Travelling entirely by yourself can be a bit hit and miss. I've had some great times meeting others doing so, but sometimes it's difficult to get to know people in busy hostels, and even the greatest cities get a bit stale if you've nobody to explore them with.

Good point. I went there with my GF who was German so maybe it's not a good suggestion.

Anywhere that has a strong backpacker's vibe and where hostel/communal living is important. I have often travelled on my own and I found nothing worse than sitting alone at night time in solitary cheap hotel rooms. In a hostel, you can be as involved as you want to be with other travellers or you can be as independent as you like, while still having the option of integration.

With that in mind, I would recommend Berlin and Barcelona as strong personal favourites. Obviously if you are looking to go further places like Buenos Aires, Rio and Cape Town are hard to ignore later on in the year.

Go to Iceland. They're supposed to be very welcoming and you have the mix of good drinking, sitting in a hot spa, seeing geysers and some the nicest scenery on the planet. And it's more different to here than say Spain or France so you'll definitely feel like you're away.

Also, they drink all night and as far as I know, very welcoming.

Do you like walking holidays? I did a stretch of the Camino de Santiago last year by myself, it wasn't lonely though as there were loads of friendly people to chat to along the way.

Wine-tasting and strolling around the markets in France, or rent a little place beside Lake Garda in Italy.

This^ I went round the world for a year on my own. Only stayed in hotels when there wasn't a hostel available or to recharge my batteries every month or so.

If you've got no plans, do something productive where you can meet people. I'd highly recommend learning to dive in Thailand for example.

Better than an organised tour, because if it turns out you don't like the people you're with on a tour, you're stuck with it.

Go from Amsterdam to Berlin and then on to Prague.

I went to Berlin by myself for five days last August bank holiday week. One of the best holidays I've been on. Because your by yourself more opportunities come around than if you go with one or two friends.

I was not necessarily looking to mix with people as I just wanted to get out of Ireland for a break. I stayed in one of the hostels. Hostels are much better for meeting similar people and you end up just bouncing of new people have a few drinks with them and then go your seperate way. I found a lot of people staying in the Hostel were coming from Amsterdam, then berlin and on to Prague for 4 days each place.
