Could this softbox work with a flashgun?

    Hey all,

    Looking to invest a bit more time (and money :o) into some lighting stuff to play about with.

    I have a cheapo ebay knock off 20x20" softbox that folds down small, and sits on a bracket that has a flashgun slid up behind it, so I can use my flashgun with my softbox. It's this product here;

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Portable-20-50cm-SoftBox-Speedlight-Light-Stand-/110607737091?pt=UK_Photography_StudioEquipment_RL&hash=item19c0bc2103

    Anywho... I love it. It's a fantastic little device, and has a lovely price tag, considering it comes with everything needed (except a flashgun) to get it up and running.

    However, I wanted to see about getting something bigger. The only similar items i can find, is the same product again, but instead of 20x20", it's 24x24". Not enough in the difference for me to justify the purchase.

    Then I found this on Amazon;

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/softbox-dynasun-wos1011-80x120cm-lightbank/dp/B001B0C2RW/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1308876851&sr=8-13

    It's 31x47", so it's a fair bit bigger than what I'm currently using and could probably be very useful.

    But I'm wondering, something I thought I'd ask ye who would know more about flashguns than I;

    With a flash head being so small, i can see how it's light would go corner-to-corner on a 20x20" square, but with a 31x47" rectangle, will the light even hit the furthest edges of the softbox?

    Cheers :)

    Im afraid I cant comment on your new investment but I was wondering about your older one. Do you have any shots where this is in use? I'm in the market for one myself and looking at an almost identical setup but probably the 24x24 to start with. Any example shots would be great thanks a lot! :D

    I haven't actually bought the new one yet. Hoping to hear something good on here first (and then I'll probably ask about how I'd attach it to a regular light stand... which is something I probably should've asked in the first place... :o )

    The one I have already, the 20x20, has only really been used outdoors by me so far, and usually just to rid the face of shadows or brighten up one side of the face if the sun is on the other.

    Here are some random shots of my Pix.

    Outisde the frame, on the right (can be seen in the glasses reflection);

    Outside the frame, to the right, lying on the ground, shooting upward;

    Outside frame, to the left (probably powered flash a little too high);

    I've still got bucket loads of learning to do with it, but for what I've been using it for so far, it's been doing what I want it to do. I use it with a Metz 48 AF-1 (Canon) if that matters.

    Just to add, I use this portable speedlight softbox: http://www.ukhighland.com/ecom-prodshow/Softbox_60x60.html

    See it in action here:

    Regarding putting a speedlight in a large softbox, try using a stefon defusser on the light to spread the light out a bit more. But remember you will lose more power.
