hi to everyone. I applied for a public job this month, got on well with the pannel of interviewers, got an email yesterday to inform me I was successful. followed by a phone call today asking can I start monday!

Yes sure no problem I said, I was informed of my salary and hours of work.
problem is I am dreading it! I am 27year and suffer bad facial acne!

im dreading starting the new job meeting new peope, I only got the call this morning and I already want to ring them back with an exuse of some kind, I could pretend I got a better offer someplace and that will be done of it. My partner & family would be very annoyed if I did this. i have been unemployed for 2 years now and could do with the extra income! Going out my mind now dont know what way to handle this. One this is for sure I dont want to go working this monday. acne.It has alsways controled my life and I have tried so many treatment and diets & nothing has ever worked. Its somthing in my family gene my brother suffers bad from it too, I think i have been cursed! Its a real big personal issue for me. one that makes me not want to meet new friends or start new jobs.

    What can i do

At the risk of sounding harsh your gonna have to get over it and go to the job. Youre unemployed for 2 years and should grasp the opportunity with both hands.

Frankly - deal with it. Someone is trying to offer you a salaried job and that is no mean feat at the moment. No one will care if you have facial acne or not. Take the job, walk into the office on Monday morning and be glad that you have the knowledge, experience and intelligence to be thought the best of the candidates that were interviewed.

Take the job, grasp it and with your first months salary book a appointment with the best private dermatologist in Ireland that money can buy

So start Monday and this will be your treat for yourself

You've two years on the dole, it's just your low self confidence speaking at the minute
You'll regret it if you don't take it.
If it's a horrendous job you can always leave but at least start!

Hey James, that's a tough cookie, I know these personal issues can be big fry.

However, I would say to you that you cannot let these things hold you down or you will miss the best years of your life, which go by damn quick.

You should take the job and once you get to know your colleagues I'm sure you'll settle in, if you make a conscious effort.

What's the alternative? Remain unemployed forever?

    Go for it.

As mikemac has said - spend your first pay cheque on getting some treatment , btw your acne obviously didn't bother the interview panel ;)

Hi there! What have you got to lose by taking the job? Acne or no acne take the job...i suffer from it too but I don't let it control my life. Stress can bring on acne. Have you tried laser treatment? Antibiotics? The simple act of recloggling pores can make it flare up even more. If its a genetic thing then you'd want to get checked out by a very good dermatologist. If its a personal issue you might need to see someone about it to give you the confidence to go for this job and perhaps other jobs. You been out of employment a fair bit so I wouldn't try and hold back and let the acne take over your life like that. So what if you meet other people, everyone is self conscious. The thing is its how you come across as a person will shine through nobody will care how you look if you can do the job!? It be a shame to let it go and with family responsibilities I wouldn't let that kind of opportunity go if having a job and an income was a priority for your family. Its not just about yourself you take care of its everyone else around you, you need to take into consideration.

If you get offered another job will you feel the same way about the civil service job? If that continues things might get a bit drastic for you that you might not ever want to return to work if that issue is causing such problems for you? Just don't worry about how you look worry about the job itself not what other people see. Everyone is equal in their right to work and have a job even though they have to earn it and step up to the mark to get it no such thing as it handed on a plate anymore, you have to work at it no matter what even if you feel like given up. For you maybe you need to see a specalist who might deal with both the personal and the medical side of it to help ease the acne on your skin. Loads of things can cause acne you might not be aware that might be a factor but likely its more than one factor but I think no matter what lifestyle, diets, treatments you undergo, it won't go away, it will help reduce the flare up ya but when its genetic there isn't much more you can do! It could be just a case of adult acne but if its a lifelong thing you have had since teenage years then you'd need medical help with it.

Look at the brightside of it, try not to look on the negative side to it think positive! As they say those that get acne don't get as many wrinkles when they are older!

Good luck with your decision OP!

Don't let this get in your way.

Take the job, see it as an opportunity to earn money to treat the condition you describe. You can afford to goto dietician, derma specialist.

    TAKE THE JOB!!!!
The interviewers obviously thought you were the right person for the position and obviously didn't think your skin condition was going to affect your ability to do the job....in my experience (a bit older though maybe not wiser), most people in life are sound and I think your first day won't be anywhere near as bad as you think it will be, get in there, your confidence will improve, you will meet new people, extra dosh for you and your partner, it's a no brainer!!!!
    Best of luck

look I know how you feel I was in a similar situation I was really nervous about starting a new job cause of a similar thing. I panicked the whole week about taking the job, I couldn't sleep, I was sweating a lot, my stomach was in knots I felt like I was going to get sick all the time and all I wanted to do was call them and get out of it. I had the phone in my hand alot of times with the number dialled but luckily i never rang it because I now have a good job and meet some new friends. Your own imagination is far worse than what actually happens most people are sound. Just think how happy your partner will be when you take the job. Good luck I hope you take the job.

Go for it! It's a great opportunity.

There are all kinds of people in the civil service, a person with acne isn't going to be made feel like a freak. (I'm prone to it myself...)

    This ^^^

Always think of that. You're there on your abilities. They thought you were the best person for the job. And two years out of work was bound to have been stressful. Which can lead to acne. Back in work, a routine, feeling good about doing your job, about having something to do....it could help your acne a good deal too.

Best of luck James....go for it.

everybody dreads their first day at anything. there are so many unknowns it can be scary. in the workplace though most people are always welcoming and positive to new employees. they've been in that position themselves so know exactly what it's like. your first day is more about getting to know the company. nobody is going to try and unsettle you.

you got on well with the interviewers which is a great start. in my experience there has always been one person on an interview panel that i would be working directly with/for and usually one other from the same department. you are already in a good position from the interview and already know that you will get on well with these people.

best of luck, i think you should take the job.

Go in there Monday morning fully confident, who cares if you have acne or not once you are good at your job thats the main thing

Dude! Take the job. You've been sitting on your bollocks for 2 years and it isn't the acne that's causing you to be apprehensive about this job, it's fear of change. You were probably comfy cosy being unemployed and that is now all about to change and you're nervous and that's understandable. You're looking for excuses to stay in your comfort zone and you're blaming your skin condition.
Come on lad, don't be self conscious. You impressed the interview people. That right there should boost your confidence. We all have something "wrong" with us whether it's dandruff or B.O. or bad breath or a few extra pounds or oversized boobs or a receding hairline......something that can make you feel a bit self-conscious. If we let these little imperfections stop us from leaving the house there'd be nobody in the damn workforce.

Acne is a completely curable condition.....you're just not trying the right treatments. Have a nice relaxing weekend. Plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and fish. Oh, and avacadoes are a great food to improve and bring a healthy shine to the skin. Don't eat any chocalate or fried crap and treat yourself to a sauna once a week to open up the pores and get rid of any gunk that's causing you to get pimples.
If I'm deficient in vitamins after a few drinking session my appearance dramatically deteriorates. My hair gets dry and coarse, my scalp flakes and my skin gets all red and scaly and my eyes, while normally bright blue, lose their sparkle and I look very bad. A few days of plenty of rest and (like I mentioned above) fruit and veg and Cod Liver Oil and I'm back to my glossy sheen again.

Take the job, mate. Get in their on monday and knock their socks off.

    Peace!

Congratulations, you got the job....before how many other candidates ???

You have what the want, acne or not. You'll be the FNG for a few days, people normally go out of their way to be nice to new employee's.

And as others have said treat yourself with your first packet in two years.

Don't want to sound harsh, but if you go into work on Monday, the only person who will have a problem with your acne, is you! Go for it, after a couple of days at work, you'll be wondering why you were even debating this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭okiss

Congrats on getting a job with the way things are at the moment.
Don't give it up as there is very little work out there at the moment.
When you get your first months salary you can go to your doctor or skin doctor re the acne as you can afford to get it sorted out.
Speaking as some one who has been on the dole you get down on it because of lack of funds and a lack of purpose with your day.

The majority of the posters clearly don't understand the issue here. The poster obviously suffers from extreme social anxiety as a result of acne. It isn't something they can just 'get over', so don't brush it off as if it's that easy.

OP - Milk used to be a big trigger for me when I was younger with spots, I cut it out and haven't got any since. See if removing dairy from your life does anything for you. Also - Clearasil Deep Pour Treatment wash is great if you ever have a red zit that you need to reduce quickly, and heal. Use it once in the morning and once at night.

I'm sure you've tried lots of treatment. Try go see another dermatologist and see what you can work out.

I agree, I find diet and stress are a major factor with acne, honestly I spent half my life being look at by doctors and taking all sorts of tablets and fluids to try to easy the problem, but I find now diet it the major factor.

Take the job and as you settle in you'll look back and wonder what all the worry was about.

No matter what you do by either taking the job or not I wish you the best of luck although lady luck seems to be smiling down on you at the moment.

Get your GP to refer you to a Dermatologist and get on Roaccutane.

if you have not tried Roaccutane the above advice will change your life.....better still pay for a private Dermatologist so you dont have to go on a public waiting list!

good luck OP & take the job!

This is exactly what I was gonna say. Its the only drug to sort out your acne, but it can only be perscribed by a dermatologist. Try it. Oh, and take the job.

Hi there, I assume from your screen name that you're a guy but nonetheless, have you considered using some concealer and foundation? If you ask some female family members I'm sure they'll show you how to apply it just to mask the acne a little. One of my guy friends does it all the time and nobody notices :)

Take the job OP! Things will only get better after you say yes.

I know how you feel. I don't have acne, but I have bad psoriasis, and it's flared up badly at the moment, so I have big red scaly patches all over my body (including my face and hands) and dry flaky bits in my hair, no matter how much I wash it with medicated shampoo etc. I hate meeting new people, especially in formal/work environments, as I feel self-conscious and I feel I look unprofessional somehow.

My attitude is to control the things in life that I can control, and to accept the things that I can't. I do everything that I can to control my psoriasis, but it's a very difficult condition to manage. My family and friends always say that the psoriasis isn't quite as noticeable as I think it is - I've no idea if there's any truth in that, but I try to keep it in mind. Also you should remember that anyone you meet will have either suffered from acne themselves in the past, or will know someone who has. You will be surprised at peoples' ability to see past your skin and get to know who you are as a person.

Your skin can only control your life as much as you let it. If you accept the job, and regret accepting it a couple of months from now, you can of course quit whenever you want to. But if you don't accept it, you are bound to end up regretting your decision, and there will be nothing you can do about it. And the thing is, if you are going to let your acne stop you from taking this huge opportunity, where does it end? How much more of your life will you miss out on because of it? You need to just accept that your acne is there, it's probably not going to go away anytime soon, but you only have one life to live and you need to come to terms with your condition and don't let it hold you back from living as full a life as possible.

Best of luck, and well done on the job offer! :)

hi guys yes I took the job. started at 8am this morning and I will be in it for the long haul.

First thing on my list to do with my payday packet is see a good dermatologist. I have been putting off the idea of Roaccutane for probably the last 10 years when I 1st learned of its side effects I suppose it didn't really bother me so much when I was young lad when i got it first get it but I am really suffering with it now in adult life.

It is a very very hard thing to have to wake up to every morning and see again at night when washing the face. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I wont have time to answer all the reply's most of them where very encouraging posts and I thank you for taken the time to reading and replying, From what I was told at the interviews There was 165 candidates interviewed over a 2 week period and only 20 posts to be filled. This is the second successful job I have had over the last 4 years. the last one only lasting for 12months as per the type of contract.

So I shall leave it at that folks, Up early in the morning with a good hour traveling to the new work place, no more late night watching tv for me : )

Thanks for all the positive comments guys! even the paper bags and the lady's foundation - those made me laugh

P.s If any1 can recommend a really good dermatologist please get in touch with me. Thanks again

    James

Hi James. You don't need to see a Dermatologist to get Roaccutane, I was able to get it prescribed to me from my GP a few years ago, so give that a shot, and if you do get on it, stock up on moisturisers and lip balms, your skin will go dry as f*ck for a while! Great stuff though, I was on it for four months and it cleared me right up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,029 ✭✭✭um7y1h83ge06nx

    Hi James.

I had a bad bout of acne when I was 22/23. Roaccutane is not the only option, your GP or Dermatologist may also recommend Tetracycline, which I was prescribed.

    http://www.vitaminstohealth.com/tetracycline-acne.html

    Good luck. :-)
