When's the last time you serviced it/what intervals ? what oils and whats the mileage.

Could be the turbo but could be split pipe or anything you could get 100k out of a whinning turbo, no clear failure point on them, it could just go one day.

Hi and thanks for the reply.Just bought the car from a guy on done deal.Said it was regularly serviced and seems sweet, had a guy with me who knows a thing or two about cars and he was happy with it too.Milage is 170k,guy was in his mid 50's and wouldnt strike ya as the type of guy who was breaking speed limits if ya get me.Drives perfect except for the winding squeel sound when under load. Also makes a noise like air being sucked through a straw from 2 to 3000 revs if thats any help.

So you know nothing about the cars history, erm have you got your check book handy. ;) You might be lucky, need it to get to a garage, or up on a ramp and check the pipes yourself.

    Check out the link.

No check book only plastic:(..Interesting thread ill have to get the pipes checked.M8 of mines a mechanic ill get it up on his lift.He took a spin with me last night and reckoned its the turbo but as i said no lag,oil loss or smoke so fingers crossed.Would a split hose make this winding squeel sound??Ta again..

Some of the turbos just make noise - does it sound like a dentists drill or a siren /owl or something else?

First thing would be to scan the car for error codes - see if anything pops up there. The second step - imo - would be a smoke leak test. That should show up any leaky pipes.

depends on the split, i had one on intercooler hose, sounded like the arch lining dragging on tyre under any acceleration. If i got revs off then car would go into limp mode, loss of power meant loss of noise :)

Great turn out here guys thanks very much hoping it wont come to a new turbo. The sound is hard to put into words, sounds like someone cycling a bicycle in motion if ya get me.Like cogs in motion but a high pitched unbalanced sound..

Noticed a small bit of lag on acceleration earlier guys, not a hole lot but delayed boost.Seems ok now..Any ideas??

Only when using banana skins, I find..........

Along with checking the piping, check to see if there is any play on the turbo vanes ( Dodgy bearing) .
