Wireless problems

bought a Dell N7010 machine a few weeks ago, and installed Natty on it.
Was having no problems at all until earlier this week when the wireless performance started degrading.

The wireless connector is an Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000, and it appears that there have been some issues with it with Ubuntu in the past, but they had been resolved, see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1715785

When I boot up, the speed is fine, but it slowly degrades to the point where it's unusable. I've discovered a workaround of sorts where I can disable networking, delete the connection from connections, and then re-enable networking and create a new connection, and then it starts all over again.
iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"MyWirelessNetwork"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:25:9C:1D:A6:EC
Bit Rate=1 Mb/s Tx-Power=14 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality=53/70 Signal level=-57 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:180 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

The bit rate can vary greatly:
iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"MyWirelessNetwork"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:25:9C:1D:A6:EC
Bit Rate=121.5 Mb/s Tx-Power=14 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality=56/70 Signal level=-54 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:53 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

there are no hardware or software issus that I can see
sudo rfkill list
0: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
1: dell-bluetooth: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
2: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
3: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

Has anyone had a similar problem, or know of a solution?
