    Hello,

It's my birthday next week, my boyfriend and I have decided to go down to Kilkenny for the day and come back the following day. This will be the first time myself and my boyfriend go to the country/a more rural area together. He is not Irish, he is asian to be specific indian. I am scared of racist attacks and strange attitudes/looks, it does happen at times in Dublin where we live but in a rural area it might get worse.

It used to get to me alot and it can do at times but most of the times now I don't mind it happening here compared to the large variety of strange people you see in Dublin we would be the most normal out of them. The thing is we are not driving and travelling by public transport. I am thinking is it safe and will we be treated like normal people, we are both young im 28 and he is 26. I am worried about the risk of getting attacked. Is there anyone from Kilkenny or that side of the country? Is it safe for us to go there

Hmm...Kilkenny...you'll need a disguise for him. Buy him a hurley, leave the handle sticking out of his bag and everyone will assume he's a local.

Kilkenny is a really nice place and has no more trouble than anywhere else. Yes there may be the odd a-hole but if you don't look for trouble you usually don't find it. It doesn't sound good that you both live in fear of race attacks, I have friends in mixed race relationships and asian friends that live their life same as any irish person.

I'd be as at risk of an attack as you or your partner, which is to say not very likely. Don't worry, enjoy your trip. Kilkenny is lovely.

    Is this thread for real?

While on the one hand you look down on people who are racist - at the same time you are fairly bigoted yourself by basically suggesting people outside of dublin are narrow-minded and racist.

    Go figure !

WOW! Are you for real? Ireland in general is a pretty liberal open minded place. Maybe you notice looks because you have it in your head that people are judging you. I doubt anyone gives a damn about you or who you are with. Also Dublin has a population of 2 million people which means a lot more rough folk, go outside Dublin and you are statistically less likely to get rough folk

Kilkenny is a beautiful city (It's a town...that's called a city). But that's definitely not a rural area by any means. If you really are talking about rural Kilkenny (Co.Kilkenny) then that's lovely in my experience too. I've never come across any trouble there. The "city" is actually more peaceful that alot of other towns. It's a kinda tourist town. And well...rural areas are the 99% of the time the safest place you can get. This fear is completely unfounded. Dublin is a much less nice place to be if you're in fear of crime than Kilkenny!

What? Is this a wind up? I lived in Kilkenny for nearly 4 years [moved out of the country a year and half ago] and grew up not far away in Tipperary and never had any issues there. I had a close friend of mine from Japan come to stay with me when I lived there and he wouldn't shut up about how nice the town was and how much he enjoyed his time in Ireland. I've lost count of the number of friends from the UK, Europe and US I've had come over, all of mixed backgrounds and religions....just last weekend I went there with a jewish friend from New York and again he said what a lovely part of the country it was and how chatty and open everyone was. Kilkenny is a big tourist town, they get people from all over the world and they even have several Indian resturants there so a number of Indians live in the town, one of whom goes to my mum as his GP with his whole family and he's never had any issues in the town.

There is no more risk of being attacked there, as where you live. It is as safe there as anywhere else.

    Enjoy your trip.
