Correct terminology?

    Don't think it matters much but when I was younger I always got corrected when I called a cool down a warm down.

    I use warm down 99.9% of the time. Thus, since I use it, then warm down is the correct term.
    The Queen has spoken. From this day onwards anyone using the term 'c**l down' will be considered a 'jogger':P

    To answer the question, "warm up" is correct (stick a thermometer in your gob to find out). Then run the race in a blaze of glory. Then, since there is an equivalence between mechanical work and heat, a slow jog would be correctly described as a "cool down".

    Intervals - yes
    Speedwork - NO!!!!!

    No the difference between pure speed sessions and intervals. 10x400m or whatever session you wanna insert their is not a speed session

    Thats the point many people think intervals/speedwork are different names for the same thing

    These "many people" include top endurance coaches such as Greg McMillan who talks about:
    Speed Workouts

    Aerobic Capacity Intervals
    Here's where we get to the fast stuff. These workouts are what most of us think of as "speedwork". They last between 400m and 2000m and are run between 3K and 8K race pace. The goal here is to spend time at your maximum aerobic capacity (or VO2max).


    He does go on to talk about "sprint workouts" but even in his famous calculator his "speed workouts" are interval times. If even he gets this "wrong" its not surprising that most of the rest of us do too.

    In fact "intervals" are not really the fast running bit at all - the intervals are supposed to be the recovery bit in between the fast reps.

    I think the McMillan puts this term in inverted comma's for exactly the reason I pointed out that many of the general public refer to these as speedwork and is more attempting to use generally accepted terms to appeal to the general target market of his training plans (he is trying to sell a product after all so using language people use rather that terms which might confuse his target market by overcomplicating his explanations)

    And middle-distance and distance runners never do speed work. :p
