We got the economy room in NL hotel the June Bank Holiday weekend.
Very nice - about 300 metres from Leidseplein - near enough to be convenient, far away enough to be quieter.

The Ibis Hotel is very central-in fact just off Central Station. They are(were, when I was there)cheap, clean and as central as you can get. It's a few years since I've been but I always found it a safe city to wander about. It's very well policed and they don't take to tourists being hassled by local botherers!I've no clue if smoking was actually allowed in the Ibis though.

The Memphis Hotel (owned by Gresham, previously Ryan,Hotels) in De Lairestraat is excellent in every respect and would take a lot of beating.

Loads of Irish people, including myself, have stayed there and been very happy with it.

However,I recently sought a quote for a midweek stay for myself and two kids (12 yrs & 8 yrs) and was quoted 178 Euro per night which did not include breakfast at 14.50 Euro per head.

    No thanks!
