    Hi,
I finished my Leaving Cert on Tuesday and have decided to start a computer repair business for something to do over the summer. I am opening up on Monday (in an office). I understand there is a €37,500 limit before you must register for tax. My first question is, do I have to register the business name? If I register the business name am I allowed to buy a .ie domain for the business?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dale Parish

    Hi Dale,

You have some misguided information, once you expect to receive more than €3,000 in sales you have to register for Income tax with the revenue however the €37,500 limit is for registering for VAT.

Have you decided to set up as a sole trader or Ltd company, I would advise to start off as a sole trader, much less complicated.

    Hi Dale

Congrats on getting the Leaving out of the way and for wasting no time in getting into business.

The previous poster was correct about the threshold of 37.5k being for VAT registration, you can register for all taxes using a TR1 (sole trader) or a TR2 (company).
Unlike the previous poster I would take a close look at your particular business circumstances before deciding on sole trader or ltd company route. Doing a lot of travel, entertainment or wanting to keep a separation between you and the business can often make setting up a company a compelling proposition, albeit with slightly higher compliance fees.

In my opinion you should register the business name, it only costs €20 and smooths the path to a dot.ie domain name.

    Best of luck

No matter how much you earn you will need to register to pay Tax.

Now it maybe that in your circumstances you will not make enough to pay tax but you will still have to submit a return at the end of the Tax year.
