Question about results

I am finished first year Arts MH101 in Maynooth, and while I got 54% overall in the three modules, I got just about 39.5% in one of my subjects (four modules in total). I assumed in the beginning that you had to get 40% in every subject, but was I wrong to assume this, and are first year results and acceptance for entry into 2nd year judged solely on the overall marks across the 12 modules in the three subjects, or was I correct to assume that you need 40% in all three subjects.

I think I am ok to go, but I just want to be absolutely certain if I have fully passed, and will not have to sit any exams in Autumn.

    Thank you.

yes you passed, in most courses you can compensate if you get between 39% and 25% in a module( or more than one) but get enough marks in other modules to bring the average up to 40%.

    loads more info here http://examinations.nuim.ie/documents/MarksandStandards_001.pdf

39.5% is 40%, they'd just round it up. It should tell you on the results page if you have passed!

Well technically, out of the 3 subjects, I only passed (40%+) 2 of them. In the 3rd subject out of first year MH101, I got 39.5% or 395 marks out of 1000, this is below 400 marks out of 1000, or pass.

I know it says Passed by compensation, and that I am ok to go into 2nd year, but I am still a bit worried if there is something I am not seeing here, and that I may have to repeat in the Autumn exams, as I did not get 40%+ in one of my subjects.

Are you certain about that? I assumed it was 40% on the spot, or a fail in that subject, so that I would have to re-sit the Autumn exams.

If this is true, thanks for the advice.

Certain yes, anything greater than or equal to 39 is generally rounded up to 40. Lower marks are sometimes too depending on other factors. But 39.5% is a pass for sure.

If you intend to keep that subject on in 2nd year and it says pass by compensation beside the subject then you will have to sit repeats in august, otherwise you ok

Actually, there are only two modules with pass by compensation in the subject, and those are the only two out of my 12 modules which I got below 40%.

Am I not allowed to choose that subject in 2nd year and would I be sticking to the other two, that I passed?

if pass by compensation is only beside your modules and not your subject or your overall mark then you are ok it will all be explained in the letters that come out tomorrow with the posted results

I see what you mean. I have a fair idea of what I want to do in future, but just to check something, do I have a choice of two, or three subjects for 2nd and 3rd years?

Hey I got my results there yesterday and I got 32% in one of my maths modules but I passed by compensation. The results sheet said pass and 60 credits but I just want to ask if I definitely don't have to repeat the module if the module isn't required and I'm not continuing it in 2nd year??
    Thanks :)

As far as I remember, once you get a hardcopy of your results in the post (I got mine today) it will explicitly tell you whether or not you have Autumn repeats.

If it says 'pass by compensation' then you're definitely safe!
