Just wondering if anyone has done this or knows of anyone that does it?

I've been using an SSD in my old PC for the last year and it's killer going back to using a normal HD.. I wasn't willing to pay €600 for apple to fit an SSD so just wondering if anyone has done it.. How hard is it or if there is anyone in Ireland that can fit one?

    I did this recently myself.
I had a few glithces along the way but it worked out. Performance much better :)

See the thread I started on it here to see what some of the glitches were about:

It does make a huge difference to the speed.. I forgot how much faster programs opened etc until I got the mac. I'm using windows 7 on the imac, I switch back to OSX when I need to.. Really wanna get an SSD installed in it tho..

macbook pro is easier to fit than an imac! and yes a considerable speed boost.

Yeah did this only recently. Bought a new Crucial 256gb c300 from eBay in UK - worked out about €340 and I'd also bought the extra looms and the mounting adaptor needed a couple of months ago from US - about $40. As many have said over the net it's not for the faint hearted. There is a point where almost every part (boards - ie Logic, Bluetooth, Wifi, power, DVD, HD) is out of the machine. This is not so bad, and also actually installing and plugging in the drive is not too bad either. It's just putting it all back without getting wires caught and obviously putting every plug and screw back in the place it came!

Every bit of masking tape is either a screw position marker or plug position indicator!

Anyhow all's good. Chime to working desktop is about 15 seconds. Installed fresh Leopard onto SSD and migrated apps and my home user library to SSD.
    Oh yeah, this is on a 2010 i7 27"

Just wanna thank Greentree(tony) for coming up today and installing the SSD (OCZ Vertex 3 120gb)

By far the best upgrade u can make on ur mac(pc)... It's so much faster than my old intel SSD its crazy. Everything opens instantly..

Quick vid of it booting and opening all the apps in the tray...

I spent most of last weekend trying to put an SSD inside my HDD but after many hours I found out I had the wrong type of SATA cable. I put my machine back together sans SDD and I bought an optical bay caddy for my iMac which accepts SSD drives.

The only problem is after putting my iMac back together it froze and on boot it made a warning noise and wouldn't boot. I read this usually means a problem with the RAM so I took out and re-inserted the RAM. I then ran a hardware test. The test froze at first but now the machine seems to be working now. I'm reluctant to open it back up and take out the optical drive. I still have the SDD and the optical caddy and I am considering returning them. Any advice? I've already spent far more time and money on this than on intended.

The good news is I also put an SDD in my Macbook pro. That upgrade was easy enough and it made a huge speed difference to an otherwise sluggish machine. Anyone who can put RAM into a machine should be able to perform this upgrade.

This looks superb - am itching to get this done too. Mine's an iMac 27" Core i7 Late 2009.. would this be able to get such an upgrade?

I PM'd Greentree, but I think he might be busy. Anyone know of anyone else who would do this professionally? :o

I'm going to be doing this to my 27" 2011 imac. Not using any mounting brackets, just high quality heat resistant adhesive velcro like this chap: http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1150451

My imac is being delivered on Monday but the special sata cable might not arrive for another week as it's being sent from the states, going to kill me having my shiny new imac lying around unused for that long >_<

I dunno about that!:D my 2010 iMac boots in around 50 seconds - and is very quick off the blocks in all other departments. Yep, I'd like that additional boost, but I'll be fupped if I'm going to try THAT!

I managed to do it but it's a lot more tricky than putting in RAM. Getting the screen off alone is a nightmare.

Would be also interested in getting this done, anyone and know someone who installs them and roughly how much?

I'm also interested in somebody to install an SSD in my late 2009 27" iMac. In Cork by the way.

I priced a few places in Dublin. Expect to pay EUR100-150 for the installation (that's excluding the SSD).

If you're looking to install SSD in a Macbook, it's far easier and not worth paying someone for.

Just installed my 120gb adata ssd in my 2011 27" imac there, was pretty straightforward, just quite time consuming. The time consumption was mostly due to me being far too cautious and careful as it was my first time poking around inside a mac.

Installed lion onto the ssd using the lion recovery tool and restored all my files and apps from a time machine backup. Very very simple process. Everything running like a dream at the moment and it boots in no time.

So glad I did it, now the proud owner of an imac with 16 gigs of ram and an ssd. I'm off now to install windows 7 through bootcamp so I can play Skyrim on this glorious 27" 2560 x 1440 screen :D
