    Hey,

I'm looking for a safe route, ala Clontarf to Howth (off road cycle paths and some on road) in Dublin.

A few of us from work went out to Howth last weekend. The beginners weren't very comfortable with the traffic (but dealt with it all the same).

Just wondering if there is any similar route around Dublin? I've thought of the Pheonix Park but looking for something but it would be boring doin laps of it.

To be honest, the cycle path from Clontarf to Sutton is about the safest in Dublin. If you dont feel comfortable on it I dont know any bike path that would.Maybe the 40 acre's in the Phoenix Park would suit you,no tarmac, but no cars either.

The War Memorial Park in Islandbridge is nice, and being on the flanks of the Liffey it has some nice hills, if you want exercise. You're not officially allowed to cycle in the park, but then again, you officially also have to have your dog on a leash; neither rule is observed.

The west side of the park leads to a cycle lane (I presume cyclists are supposed to wheel their bikes to that point and then begin to cycle?) that runs along the Liffey for a distance of a kilometre or two. Very nice, though short.

The war memorial gardens and adjoining cycle path to Chapelizod are beautiful for a leisurely cycle. You could try something like this.

Starting at the park gate entrance to Phoenix Park, wind your way around the more scenic areas of the park before exiting at the gate by the old church that leads into Chapelizod. From there swing a left, cross over the liffey and take another left at the crossroads. This brings bring you to the start of the cycle path along the river that leads back towards the war memorial gardens of recent queen vist fame. Do a quick loop around the back of the gardens to get a nice view of the monuments and rose gardens. You can make this ride longer by adjusting the path through Phoenix park.

You'd need to make that link 'public' for anyone else to see it, I think.

You could try the Dublin Outer Ring Road between Lucan and Grange Castle Roundabout. It is a dual carriageway with a largely unused bus and cycle lane. There is another cyclelane on the footpath.
Great fast road surface, very well light even on winter nights.
As safe as you will get I think.

    St Anne's Park?

Or some of the streets around there are quite pleasant - it may be possible to navigate out to Howth by staying off the main roads and meandering through suburbia!

Phoenix park is your best option for a nice safe cycle away from heavy/fast moving traffic... And as its a good way for your beginners to get used to traffic.... either that or take up Mountain biking...oh but there's rocks!

Believe me, I've no problem cycling on the road and don't really mind where I go. A few of them like to stop off for a coffee and a bite to eat while I'd rather to work up a sweat!!

Is there a decent route out along the southside coast...dun laoighre dalkey direction that can accommadate both?
