Cinema Seating Claustrophopia

Was at Hangover 2 last night in Cineworld and it's happened again! No matter where I sit at the cinema, within ten mins into the start of the movie I am surrounded. (People who come in 10 mins to the cinema is a major erk, but a different topic).

156 seats in screen 12, 20ish people at it and I get 7 sitting all around me, and I mean right beside me as well. Does this happen to anyone else? Is it some human sociology experiment? I don't suffer from clostraphobia, but in the cinema it is starting to make me uncomfortable.

    Any thoughts?

    Don't sit in the middle!!

I bet you were sitting right in the middle of the cinema where you get the perceived best view or at the back in the middle.

Other people want the best view as well so thats where they sit.

I don't like being surrounded either so i just sit off to the side. You can see the film just as well from there.

Nope, I never sit in the middle anymore because I want my space. I was sitting 4th row from the front, 4 seats in from the right (as you're facing the screen).

Yeah, I always sit to the side (the one furthest from the entrance) for this reason as well.

Maybe you're hot and they want to touch you?

Or they could have been short sighted.

Or if they were coming in late they wanted the nearest seat they could find to reduce disruption.

They're obviously trying to rob your popcorn.

    They didn't touch. :P

One had glasses, and sat in front of me.

The nearest seat would have been on the left side nearest the entrance, and they went past the middle seats to get to me.

Consider bringing two jackets to the cinema and put one either side of you; tell anyone who wants to sit there that it's taken, you're waiting on friends.

It's an option. But I don't like 'lying' about seats taken. They have paid for their seats like everyone else so they are entitled to sit where they want. I just can't understand why it is on top of me.

I sent them there to freak you out...

Well i doubt they'd be put out by not rubbing shoulders with you and you should be entitled to an enjoyable cinema experience so i think it's fair game. I know it's a bit uncool but what's worse is them not knowing how much they've annoyed you!

The other option as mentioned is sitting in undesirable seats/farthest away. I bet u've got sweet seats!

This works for me on the bus - bring in a tissue with you and look all sniffley and pretend to blow your nose. No-one is gonna want to sit beside some snot faced person for over an hour.

Sitting at the side doesn't alway work either
I was sitting at the side once and then a couple came in and sat behind me.
And then asked me to move as they said I was tall and in their way

You were very close to the front, a lot of people won't go that close.
Maybe there were lots of people behind you and you didn't notice them

Yeah, the guy behind me was doing a pretty good job. He was like the guy the South Park kids were playing against in WoW. I was waiting for him to lick the back of my head when the lights went down!

I like the tissue idea, and coupled with an oversize novelty hat I think it might solve people behind and beside me. I can live with someone in front. Who thought enjoying the cinema would involve so much pre planning!

There was alot at the back but there was 6 rows between me and the closest and still the guy sat right behind me.

    Well that's your problem there.

    :P

It wasn't on at the IFI :P

Actually, that's the only cinema it doesn't happen in come to think of it.

It tends to be a tight fit in cinema 3 in the IFI - been there for a few sold out screenings recently and it's best to just tuck yourself in near the far wall.

As a predominantly daylight cinema goer, it's the only place it's really an issue in.

go during the day, most showings are empty or close to it, I've been to the cinema a few times where I've been the only person in the screen, wasnt the best experience to watch The Descent in though :/

    Can't due to work :p

Used to enjoy cinema when I was living out in Whitehall. Nobody ever went to the cinema in Santry Tue or Wed. I just wouldn't make the trek out there now for flat soft drinks and popcorn that makes you constipated though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,308 ✭✭✭kiddums

    It's happened me too.

People have sat behind me then cmplained about not being able to see.
I blame them for sitting behind the 6ft4 guy with the 5 inch mohawk.
I sat up straight in the seat when I heard them and they moved.
