    Hi all -

A friend of mine who lives in America would like to relocate to Ireland, but is stuck in the circle of need a permit to get a job, but needs a job to get a permit.

The first recruiter she contacted was not terribly helpful. My friend is a mid-level marketing professional (degree plus nearly 20 years of experience) - there seem to be quite a few job postings that she qualifies for, but most are through agencies. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any info or advice I can forward on to her.

Can't really help you - I know very little about the permit process . I do have to say that the unemployment situation is terrible and I think anyone coming here is mad to do so.

I wouldn't hold out too much hope of getting a work visa if they're coming from the US. The rules state that the job must be advertised for 6 weeks in a national newspaper before an employer can apply for a work visa for a non-EU citizen.

The chances of a marketing job being unfilled for 6 weeks are pretty slim and without your friend being here on the ground they are even slimmer again.

If she was a software engineer or doctor then it wouldn't be too much of a problem once an understanding employer was found. But as it stands there are plenty of Irish & EU citizens more than qualified in marketing so I'm afraid she's out of luck tbh.

Jobs through agencies have to be viewed with caution, they could just be cv collection exercises, a bit like estate agents saying they have buyers for houses.
