    Don't pre-book.

There will be backpacker's accommodation everywhere and it's always great not to have anything set in stone.

I did a 5 week inter-railing trip two years ago and I would say dont pre book any more than 2-3 days in advance. Be sure to look up any festivals as accom will be much harder to get in those cities , I arrived in Budapest the day before the big music festival there and spent 6 hours in a internet cafe looking for accom !! Sometimes you need to book a seat on trains or sleeper beds so just pop into the station the day before you leave if you need to do this i.e if your planning on saving on accom and getting a night train.

The lonely planet Europe on a Shoestring is a pretty handy book but quiet heavy and not totally necessary as you'll meet loads of people and get all the info you need form the hostels you stay in anyway.
