Just looking for a bit of advice... I have always wanted a Mini Cooper, it's my dream car. I currently own a 2008 Toyota Yaris Luna with 70000km on it. While driving home the other day I spotted a lovely green Mini at the Toyota garage in Lucan. It's 2006 1.6L with 85000 km on it. They're asking for just under 10k, I'd be trading in my car. Am I mad?? My heart says go for it but as I know nothing about cars I thought I'd ask the experts ;)

    Is this the car?

In terms of whether you should or shouldn't go for it there's the two aspects - head or heart :)

    - in terms of the financials, the car itself looks to be in good nick, nice high spec on it with leather interior and decent mileage. Price is about right too for Mini Coopers of that age and mileage. The only thing is you'd have to be happy that you're taking a 2 year step back in year compared to your own car. That means you'd just have get the car checked by somebody qualified and make sure it has been well maintained and serviced regularly. The other aspect is obviously are you happy enough just taking a two year step back in car?

    - in terms of the heart side of things, if you can afford it and it would make you happy then go for it! :) Life's too short, if you have the money and walking out to the Mini every day would put a smile on your face then go for it!

If I'm right that version of the Cooper has approx 120bhp so it won't be lightning fast by any means but it will be a fun car to drive and it definitely would have more "personality" that your Yaris.

If it makes you happy and you can afford it definitely go for it

    Am I mad??

That car is just so much better in every way than a Yaris that you'd be mad not to. Good spec, nice colour, long dealer warranty - go for it!

But ring your insurance first: the Cooper may cost a good bit more to insure.

(Yes, I have an 06 Cooper myself, but that one is better than mine).

I keep having a similar debate myself...

Do I keep my 06 2L TDI Passat with the fabulous DSG box until she dies or I have enough to change her properly...

OR.. sell her for about 8-10k (hard to know based on Carzone etc but there does seem to be an increase in prices for older decent diesels lately?) and either buy something like an older B5.5 Passat and spend the difference, or try and get something like a nice late E39 era 5 series or (if I could stretch to it) an early 04/5+ era (new shape) A6...

I think I'd worry I'd be buying someone else's problems though with those cars?
