An anime screening event has been organised for Saturday 10th July in The Exchange, Dublin. This is the first of what is hoped to become a regular event. The actual film to be screened is yet to be decided (Akira/Paprika seem to be the options) - so post on their FB wall with your preferences! The link to the event page is here.

Cosplaying is allowed and the cost is a donation of a suggested 2-3 euro. The event will run from 5pm to 9pm. Spread to the word to as many people you know - looks like it'll be an enjoyable evening!

Raging I can't make this event :( Gonna be on holidays booo.

I'm in the Exchange regularly and it's an awesome little venue - really homey, comfy couches and a great place to chill out. I'd really recommend people attend this if they can. I was speaking to the organiser recently and he's a pretty cool guy - very interested in trying to set up a regular anime fan gathering in the city centre. So all support welcome :)

Yeah it was really good. A good few people at it. They showed one episode of Genshiken, Cat Soup which I wasn't really fond of, then Akira had a good start, got boring and dragged towards the end and the ending was terrible. It is something I wouldn't watch again but glad I seen it as it is a classic. :p

I think it wasn't really advertised enough but I was talking to Micheal who orgnaised it and will give him a hand advertising the next event at cons and stuff, so hopefully more people will know about it.

    Heeeey :p

I am just not really nto the whole "happy ever after kinda endings" I also felt it dragged then all of a sudden it was over. I am still puzzled over some characters and the story, like the conclusion didn't come together very well.

All in all I did enjoy it and really appreciate the art style, I say it was fantastic for it's time. :)

There was nothing happy ever after!
Neo Tokyo was destroyed. Tetsuo and the Espers are gone. Yamagata is dead. Even Kaneda's bike is ****ed up.

Fantastic for it's time? FOR IT'S TIME?!!?!?

It's fantastic for it's time in the way Snow White is fantastic for it's time. Which is fantastic for ALL time.

In all seriousness though, you should read all six volumes of the Dark Horse release. It's bloody brilliant. Nevermind being one of the greatest anime/manga, it's one of the greatest science fiction stories. The fact that it also had some of the best executed linework you'll ever see in comics is just a massive bonus.

The ending of Akira still blows my mind. Astonishing stuff, amongst the many pinnacles of post-Hiroshima Japanese cinema! When you put it in the context of the nuclear bomb, there's so much more depth to it.

The impact the WW II nuclear attacks had on Japanese media, even modern Japanese media, never ceases to amaze me. They really know how to do apocalyptic!

To be honest it was quite emotional
when Kaneda lost his closest mate Tetsuo, they were like blood brothers

Yes I heard the manga is better, at most of the times mangas are always better like novels they go more into the story and are deeper. I would like to give the manga a try.

@ Johnny_ultimate: Yeah in that prospect Akira was very interesting the historical post-a references and I did find the science fiction element to it interesting that is why I would like to give the manga a read.

I'm a little surprised to hear that so many people hadn't seen Akira before.

    Eh, right there Ted.

Some things can be argued, others can not.

Akira is one of those things that can not. If you truely think it 'sucked' and aren't just trolling, you have absolutely no ability to discern quality animation from crap.

I have about 100 pieces of production art from that film, between cels and douga..and they're some of the most complex things I've seen.

Just look at the level of detail in this, look at it. And that's just one cel! In fact, you can't even see a lot of the detail in this picture. The highlights on that explosion are amazing

    img_b.aspx?ImageID=397584&Pass=

    And here's the douga -

    img_b.aspx?ImageID=397588&Pass=

    And the genga -

    img_b.aspx?ImageID=397593&Pass=

Look at these smoke effects! Again, all hand drawn and painted -

    img_b.aspx?ImageID=432100&Pass=

    img_b.aspx?ImageID=438225&Pass=

More gorgeous detail. Check out the sheets -

    img_b.aspx?ImageID=438227&Pass=

    img_b.aspx?ImageID=438231&Pass=

Insane detail for something you only see for a split second. Otomo was a lunatic.

When did I say the animation was bad? The animation was top quality.

The story sucked. A story consists of a beginning, middle and end. The ending was terrible, that was suppose to be the climax of the movie and this ruined it. This was like getting a blowjob from a hot girl and her stopping just before you finish.

The art as great and I really appreciate it that and it has an interesting story but I really think Akira is overhyped and the story could be portrayed alot better. People go on like it is the best thing since slice bread. I am even a big Evangelion fan and agree that Evangelion is over hyped when it did have flaws.

Everyone to their own I guess.. Impressive cells.

It's been a few years since I've last watched Akira (actually that might be tonight's viewing :)) but I've always thought it was the pinnacle of action cinema. Like Evangelion (more flawed I'll admit, even if I'm totally in love with the franchise) it shows what happens when a director doesn't bow to formula, and goes with a scale that transcends what is expected. Happy endings aren't always the most effective, and sometimes the only solution is a grim or inconclusive one.

There's certainly something to be said that the ideas of Akira get extremely heavy and confusing at times (surely only confounded by stuff getting lost in translation), but straight up sucks? There's so much to love besides that minor concern - the atmosphere, the visuals, the music, the ballsiness, the ideas - that I like o1s1n find it hard to say it simply sucks. Akira is pure animation, giving life to ideas that live action could probably never capture - and the constantly threatened Hollywood remake is an absolute shame for this very reason.

To be fair the movie is only half of the story.
