I need to visit my GP next week to ask for a prescription for the pill. I've never been on the pill before; is there any way I can avoid disclosing this to the GP, or will I just have to get on with it& be upfront about the lack of physical history? (GP is a family friend)

no, of course you need to tell the GP. You need to discuss what might suit you, what wouldn't have suited you in the past (if they didn't know you hadn't been on it before), etc. If you can get a pill prescription surely you can disclose your history of it?

Just an f.y.i, you do not have to go to your own gp for the pill. You might feel more comfortable going to a different doctor you don't know.

+ 1 OP there isn't just one pill - there are many different brands and it might actually take a couple of trys with different brands of pill to find the one that suits you. The GP also needs to go through the possible side effects with you and other options for birth control...depending on a number of factors an implant or coil might suit you better.

What do you mean by lack of physical history? The pill is not the only contraceptive you could have been using up to now if that's what you mean?!

GP's are law bound to not reveal your medical history with anyone. My GP is a family friend also, and i was worried about it. He actually brought it up, and told me not to worry, that he wouldnt be discussing it with anyone.

Even if your parents/family do find out, surely they would be glad that you are taking pre-cautions, and practising safe sex?

As others have said, you don't by any means have to go to the family GP, you can go to literally any GP (or women's health clinic etc) Plus doctors are absolutely bound by confidientiality, it's one of the bedrocks of medicine and they can get into big trouble for breaching it, so needless to say they don't. In general a doctor will not discuss your private medical care with anyone, except where it's necesary to consult with other healthcare professionals.
