Can i fly one of these in this country ?

    http://www.airplanemart.com/advertisers/preview_ad.php?opt1=4f9c76cf97f8404f93c5990dd4ef842ea2

no idea were to put this as its nothing to do with the military other then the fact that it used to shoot zeros and Messerschmidt E109s down, and if you like wwII planes and inform me that the spit fire is better I know it is but prefer the noise and look of the p51...

can i fly this if i have a license and money to got with it ?

but if you have the means in this country generally u can do what you want...if it works out for u would luv to see it fly...beautiful machine...its range and speed gave it the edge over the spitfire in my opinion, right machine for the job at the right time

nice dream - good luck with it - I have it in my head that I heard some USAF vets in a documentary talking about a mustang pilot bagging an ME262 in 1945, dont think the spit could have done that

If I had the choice I would have one of both. In any case later model Spits were as good as the Mustang. I think the P51 always had the advantage in range. In any case there were just so many of them. But the later Griffon engined Spitfires were as good as anything they just didn't have the numbers of the P51s.

In truth some of the best fighters of the war were late war Russian but they weren't sexy and never appeared in 'Empire of the Sun' so they never get the good press.

Many ME 262's were shot down by Mustangs though the circumstances generally were that the P-51's used their range/endurance to orbit the German airfields where they would pounce when the 262's were at their most vulnerable - landing.
Doubtless a few Mustangs got lucky in dog fights as well.

Isn't the P51D the first Mustang with the Merlin engine?

I thought that was the difference between a good fighter and an excellent one.

The P-51B was the first fitted with the Merlin, afaik. :)

You know some of us actually grew up around Raf base's in the uk

a regular ocurance of my life were having tornados flying a treetop over our house, this was in the early 80s health and saftey what ? I've seen them go 20 feet above the trees and do near vertical lifts I've seen harriers appear out of know were and ive sat in mustands spitfires, e109s...
    :)

Movies do nothing for me sheer presence of being near them does

yes and no......:D firstly it would be on the N reg which is acceptable to fly here......there might be a sticking point re it's age and you may need authorization from the IAA. You will probably be given restrictions of the EI classic and vintage guys as in no flying in controlled airspace and no flying over urban areas.............total guess on my behalf.

Now, the bottom line.....I'd say you'd have to have a purse of a couple of million to buy and then run the thing. Maintenance is massive which can be done in the uk......merlin engine.

Bottom line you need to talk to the IAA as it's not any old N reg floating around.

For the rest of us it's a euro millions lotto pipe dream.

    Hi there
The IAA does not have a written protocol for ex-military aircraft of the calibre of a Spitfire or a Mustang, unlike the CAA or FAA. There are both large(a C47 and a Whirlwind helicopter) and small ex-military aircraft operating in Ireland but the majority are Piper Cubs, which are catered for by ILAS, as Classic aircraft. The IAA would tend to follow the CAA's written protocol (A8?) on such aircraft. The best thing to do is simply write to the Airworthiness Section of the IAA and outline your proposal, especially if you want to keep it on the N register and operate it permanently in the State.
    regards

Same here...only a decade earlier. I had to make to make do with RAF + USAFE Phantoms,Hunters,V bombers, the odd Lightning etc ;):D

Edit: I almost forgot the Reds Gnats flew over the house one day...low.. en-route to some airshow

Am I the only one to think this thread is a bit, how should I put it... 'special'?

If you had the means to do it you'd be ringing the IAA direct to find out. Good luck to you with the day dreamin'!

Alan, your spot on.....if one had the funds for such a machine, the Iaa would be a walk over.......whoops ....say no more

Same here:cool:, Only it was formations of Pfalz D.IIIs, S.E.5s, Fokker D.VIIs and Fokker Dr.Is dogfighting it out overhead. Ok, I'm not that old although old enough as these were aircraft used in filming movies like the Red Baron, Darling Lilli and the Blue Max.

But mostly it was um er..... exciting aircraft like the DH Vampire or Percival Provost, Chipmunk and the Alouette III which whined it's way over my house for many years.

But the best ever was in 1996, when a mixed formation gave most of my family a huge fright when it suddenly appeared out of the clear blue sky.. It consisted of F18s, F14s, A6s, EA6s etc. All aircraft from the JFK which was about to visit Dublin. An absolutely amazing sight!

If one were fortunate ( and wealthy ) enough to be able to keep a P51 would the correct fuel be available in Ireland ?
I thought the Merlin required a very high octane fuel to get the best performance - would bog standard Avgas do the job ?

    :D

Funnily enough, I got to sit in a few of those WW1 replicas in the early 80's.:)

I remember that. What was even better was the phone call the next day from the (now) brother in law to say he had won tickets in the lottery to get onboard and offering me a slot!!

I will never forget that day.

    $2200 - 30 minute flight training session
$3200 - full hour flight training session
$50 - a full length video and audio of your flight training

Honestly I don't think it would be worth that much;)

But seriously the back seat of the F4 was famous for it's vomit inducing effects. Even from experienced aviators. But it would still be worth it. My choice would be the F16............or F18 or Lightning (any model) or anything with bang seats and a war record quite frankly.

geez those prices seem extortionate - if an hour in a cessna is under 200 dollars how can they justify over 3,000 dollars for an hour in a P51 ?
Granted the fuel consumption would be greater and the wear and tear , etc would be more expensive on such an old aircraft but it still seems a serious rip-off !

There's a huge difference in valuation between, say a C172 and a twin stick 'Stang. Insurance costs must be high too.
