I know this thread is pretty old although I'm really interested what is current working environment in IBM - especially in software development departments.
I've read few articles about quite interesting IBM projects and would like to know how is it to work there now ?

Offhand only: they are decent enough to work for, a typical American style corporation.
Java would be the development environment favoured, with Eclipse being the tool of choice.
However, I reckon any experience in IBM specifc s/w, such as Lotus, Rational, DB2 etc would be a major advantage.
As well, there are major drives for the company to upskill on techs such as Cloud, virtualisation and agile.

Great company to work for. Lots of opportunities to upskill or change the direction of your career from within. They pay monthly, but if you're fresh out of college, they give you an advance to help you out. Nice touch.

New hires have to do a lot of e-learning-based training. Also, IBM uses an Agile work model, so if you join them as a developer, expect to meet with UX Architects, Information Developers, and Testers regularly.

They never mentioned the advance in pay to me! Ive recently joined them on a grad role and wasnt told about an advance in pay. Ill survive until I get paid, but the advance would of been nice as ill get taxed to the balls on my first pay (emergency tax).

No e-learning yet, but im sure there will be. And yeah, lots of meetings
