Right have 6000 euro to spend, must be a diesel, id rather not go above 1.6 because of tax, these are the type cars i have in mind at the moment

    ford focus 1.6tdci
    Opel Astra 1.3 cdti
    Seat Cordoba 1.4tdi

Should i be looking at maybe the C5 1.6hdi or a Megane 1.5 dci?

I really need something thats economical , Any other recommendations?Ive never heard too many good storys about renault's but are they as bad as most people think?ive been looking on donedeal and carzone but havent seen anything thats caught my eye just yet, and if i see something that looks nice its got 130,000 "motorway" miles

Id apreciate any help or advise on the selection,or any good/bad points on the above mentioned cars

Cordoba is a grand car but not for long journeys. Too noisy

    Try a corolla D-4D or mazda3

The coralla's seem to be very pricey compared to other cars,if i saw one at very nice money then it might be a different story, must check out the mazda 3

@vectra i do about 40miles each way to and from work, when you said the cordoba was noisy, what kind of distances do think it gets too noisy over?

    Hi,
    I had a '08 Cordoba 1.4Tdi ( Sport - 80 Bhp version )
Bought it new so was fresh. It was a brilliant car to be fair, BUT, if you have the foot down a bit and moving on it can very very noisy.
Driven easy it was grand, I must admit I am not one for toddling around, But it was brilliant on diesel. I averaged 700kms per tank around town which was all stop start driving. I think the tank was around 40 liters or so.

I wouldn't say No to anyone buying one but I do feel there would be quiter options out there.

Should you decide to go for one. try to get a 1.4 Sport. I was told by the dealer when I bought it that the standard 70 bhp version was fairly dead compared to it.

Remember that the Cordoba is an Ibiza with a boot which is in the segment below the others on the list. You will not have the same interior space as in a Focus or Astra.

407? Certainly much nicer than a Cordoba or Astra. My old man had one and it was a great car. Nice and comfy to drive, loads of room and very economical. The only reason he traded it in was because the tax was "savage"

tbh i would be more inclined to go for a 307 over a 407,have driven a focus recently it was a 2010 1.6tdci and found it nice to drive, drove the brothers astra 1.4 sxi gtc, nice car to drive but i dont know how the 1.3 diesel would compare, anyone here have a 1.3 cdti astra?how do they find it on diesel and what is it like to drive?

out of the choices above i'd pick the focus! i've no solid evidence for picking it over the others just my opinion! (fun to drive, nice lookin maybe?):o
the mazda and the corolla sound good too!
how about them kias or hyundais, cee'd, i30?

    Seems a well spec'd c5.
Tbh i would rather the 2.0 hdi in these estate models as the 1.6 may struggle
    alittle with the added weight.
It also looks like this one has had a new turbo fitted recently...

Had a 75bhp 1.3 diesel corsa for a week a while ago, fine around town but god it was slow and lacking any grunt. It would really frustrate me after a while.

I didn't think it was that great on fuel either for how sluggish it was, not noticeably better than my old 1.9 diesel fabia vrs which was alot more powerful.I was getting 50mpg from that.

I dont think you will see any real savings between a small diesel and a good 1.9 like the 150bhp Astra.Besides the extra 200 euro road tax, there is no real difference, insurance basically the same, fuel economy basically the same, it's just the road tax.

    What's 200 euro when your spending 6k?
