I'll be staying just outside Cavan town for the weekend and am looking for any tips of a good route for a spin in that neck of the woods. Something lumpy around 120-130km would be perfect, does Cavan have any mini Alps :) ?

Hi, General roads in the area are quite lumpy, not many flat roads about.
From Cavan town head for Ballyjamesduff, Oldcastle, Kells, Moynalty,
Kingscourt,Baileborough via the climb at Cornasaus. From Baileborough head for Cavan and you will rejoin the N3 about 10k fom Cavan town.
The route might be longer at about 150k but you can cut out Kingscourt if you wish and go to baile from Moynalty.Enjoy

    for bigger hills go west.

Don't worry about the N87, there is hardly any traffic on it.

That route would make a really good sportive, if only someone would organise it :D

Bailiborough is suppose to be the highest village in Ireland. Is a few long climbs out of Ballyconnel which The Rás went over last year. Tunney spends a lot of time in West Cavan & could possibly weigh in with some good routes around there. Go from Cavan to Cootehill, Shercock, Kingscourt, Bailiborough, Virginia, Cavan, has plenty of drags.

On the other side you could head out for Killeshandra, on to Arvagh and then Loch Gowna for a bit of scenery. If you'd like some more hills, turn out from Arvagh towards Moyne and skim along the Leitrim border before turning back towards town.

Doesn't Roundwood claim that particular accolade ?

Mapped this route for you (similar to what ventoux suggested) I know these roads and I think you will enjoy. Ignore the details at the start just look for the Ballyjamesduff road out of Cavan. A few nice drags after Oldcastle and between Kingscourt and Baileboro (Muff). By the way when do you intend doing your spin?

Yes Roundwood is the highest, Bailieboro is perhaps the highest town but Roundwood collection of houses is higher.

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions, really helpful! I've been offline since making that post so sorry about the delayed response.

Will head out in the morning, not sure which route....but man it really does look like flat road is scarce in these parts so it should be a good workout.

I think so, is there a web site or are you going to send out an e-mail?

Was pressed for time in the end so went for a 100km route from Cavan to Ballyjamesduff, onto Virginia, up to Baileborough and then back. Will have to do the climbs out of Baileborough another time.

Good route - there is very little by way of flat ground so it's a good route for building up power by pushing it up the many rolling hills and keeping workrate up on the way down. Thanks again for the tips.
