Changing a tube (Back tire) checklist??

    Hey,

Got a flat while out on a spin last Saturday. As far as I know I've done all the right things.
    • unlock breaks
    • set chain to the highest gear etc
    • re-attach tire, close quick release
    • lock breaks
I've had problems with changing gears since, mainly between 4,5 & 6.
The gears jump between gears when I go through a bit of rough road, they also don't connect first time between the above but mainly don't go into 4 & 5 unless I go up and down all the gears.

I clean the the cassette and chain regularly.

Did I do anything wrong while changing the tube? Any suggestions?

Is the wheel fully into the cut-outs? I'd check the wheel is fully in, on both sides as if not, the wheel won't be straight with regard to the chain. Did you need to slacken the quick release skewer screw? If so, is this fully tight again?
It might just be that you may need to adjust the derailleur slightly - I'm not the person to ask about this, but I'm sure someone else here will know - but I'd check the things I mentioned first before adjusting anything

If your gears are jumping you need to re-index your gears.
If after that they still jump you may need to change your chain and or casette.
Change chains every 3500-400km and the casette should be changed every 10000-12000 km on average.

I do often find however that after a thorough clean of chain and casette that my chain jumps a bit. Simply reindex. Move the barrell adjuster a quarter turn (up or down) to see if that makes a difference). If not go another qtr turn etc etc.

    After fixing a puncture?

Have a look at my answer to "issue with gears" in this section. It sounds similar, you may have stretched the cable a little when you moved the derailler.

A handy little video for anyone unsure of changing a rear tube

Check that the wheel is seated correctly in the dropouts (not at a slight angle) as somebody said, and if there were any spacers on the axle, check that they are in the same place as before - i.e. on the inside or outsde of the frame relative to the wheel nuts.

If this is all ok, it's entirely possible that the wheel wasn't seated correctly originally, but the gears were tuned while it was in this position so the indexing worked fine. It would take only a mm or so change to throw everything off.
