    Hi there,

Car in getting engine repaired after timimg belt failure. A lot work has to be done and costing about eur1500 (I'm using local repair shop - one man band type).

My question is can I insist on detailed invoice showing parts purchased and labour costs - ideally vat number on there too? Are they legally obliged to do this? I'd prefer not to pay by cash - can I insist on checque/credit card?

It's a lot of money to shell out and I want some comeback in case problems up the line.

If he's a 1 man operation he may not have a credit card machine. There shouldn't be a problem with a cheque.

Your invoice should have a list of all parts and labour.

Personally, I'd haggle on the price, if paying cash I'd try for a discount.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

If its a proper registered garage then you shouldn't have to ask for an itemised bill with vat etc, it should be the norm.

As for the check or credit card, well the obvious thing would have been to ask when you left the car in but alot of places don't take checks any more as they are too old fashioned and hard to verify.

Insist on itemised Vat receipt and if they are not happy with cheque, get a bank draft.
