Hey guys, I might have to replace my gearbox in my 98 corolla as there seems to be a bearing gone in it, i wouldnt be very upto date with cars but i know that getting a gearbox replaced isnt usually that cheap but i was wondering if a gearbox from a 98 avensis would fit it as a family member has one which they are about to scrap??

Try a breakers yard - you shouldn't have much trouble picking up a secondhand gearbox for a car as common as a Corolla.

Bearings going in a Toyota is far from uncommon though it is usually accopmanied by a whining noise, which progressively gets louder before the box eventually does go. Not much good to the OP now but if you hear a whine coming from the car next time get it seen to asap - when detected early enough you can get away without doing too much gearbox damage.

Also worth trying is the Corolla that came before yours (the 93-97 shape one), as that has the same engine and gearbox as your car OP. The 98-02 Corolla is heavily based on the 93-97 one anyway - the mechanicals are largely the same in both cars.

    If It's a 1.3 then no.

You'd probably pick up a complete corolla for hundreds. I think its the same box back to 1992 but am open to correction

cheers guys, had a feeling it wouldnt fit! its started making a strange noise last week but wasnt anything major only a slight rattle when id change gear but then disappear but this week its got a bit worse, the rattling noise lasts a bit longer and is a good bit louder. fairly positive its the gearbox because when i clutch it the noise stops. bringing it to my local mechanic this eve so hes going to take a look, says he should be able to pick up a 2nd hand gearbox alright

i might/probably be wrong but the bit with engaging the clutch, would it have anything to do with the release bearing by any chance, that happened in my uncles one ages ago and he was fairly sure it was the gearbox aswell. Or maybe changing the oil in the gearbox?

    best of luck anywho!

You got it in one, if the noise disappears when the clutch is fully depressed then you know it's the box that's at fault.

ha ha well i feel very stupid now! it wasnt the gear box at all, the heat shield at the front of the engine had come loose and was rattling off the exhaust. my mechanic took it for a spin and was miffed by what the noise was but soon discovered!! haha. thanks for all the help anyway lads
