What car to buy?

I had a car accident recently and wrote off my car(Insurance deemed it not worth repairing in light of the value and cost to repair - the air bags went off).

I am now going to get a cheque of about €4,000.

My previous car was a Ford Focus saloon 1.4 lx, petrol. I was very happy with it and I was very disappointed that it wasn't worth repairing. I now need to get another car and would consider getting a similar model again but would welcome any other suggestions. I am Dublin based.

    Here are my requirements:

    Budget: €6,000 max.

Usage: I don't drive to work and wouldnt use it much during the week apart from a few errands here and there. My main mileage would be driving to Cork about once a month/every 3 weeks.

Size: I'm happy with saloons and would like to keep away from Hatchbacks as I find them a bit small. I don't have any children (yet!).

Petrol/Diesel: I don't know if the mileage I do would warrant getting a diesel but correct me if I'm wrong.

Private/Dealer: I bought my last car privately and got a good deal on it but would consider going with a dealer if the price was right.

Engine size: I would be looking at 1.6 maximum partly due to the impending higher insurance bill and also cos my missus is still learning and I don't want anything too powerful. 1.4 was fine but maybe was a little underpowered.

Cars that I have considered: Ford Focus Saloon, Skoda Octavia, Mazda 626/323 (not sure if in the same class), Toyota Corolla. I would welcome any other suggestions.

I hope that is enough information.
