Training Contracts on FAS?

There are two trainee solicitor positions advertised by FAS on the WPP1 scheme. Is this allowed? (By which I mean recognised by the Law Society).

For example they are 3 and 9 months in duration - your training contract must be two years in duration after PPC1.
If the training solicitor does not sign your indentures of apprenticeship for Blackhall place it's not really a training contract is it?

Can claim credit for the 9 months in office against your qualification? If you haven't done the PPC1 the max you can claim in an office is 4 months anyway.

Anyone able to shed some light on this for me?

Do you have a link to the ad? It's possible that it's "training" rather than being a "traineeship" (as in apprenticeship)...

Yep; says "trainee solicitor" all right, and one of the positions specifies that you need your FE1s while the other one doesn't...

I'd suspect that FAS may have gotten the terminology wrong.

It might be the case, that presuming the placement goes well there will be an opportunity for a training contract and the time there can be deemed time for 4 months credit.

It also could be a clever way for the solicitor to avoid paying the trainee during PPC I as if the trainee has worked in the Office prior to PPCI the training solicitor must pay them during PPCI. If the trainee was on a FAS placement, I'm sure it could be argued that he/she was not employed prior to PPCI so they wouldn't have to be paid.

Either way, solicitor gets a trainee out of it and saves a bucket of money on wages.

What are you suggesting? Maybe I'm missing something but I'm not getting it.

Perhaps that the advertisements are not for a TC, rather a law clerking position for work experience to boost your CV while searching for a TC?

Thanks for the replies. I thought if you are a "trainee solicitor" it means you have a training contract... and so the jobs cannot be for a trainee solicitor as they obviously do not fill the criteria.

Anyway.. I am not unemployed so I'm not allowed apply anyway. If I was though I would be interested in verifying that that they can contribute time to your TC and whether it is ok to pay nothing for trainees now despite the law society rules

?? Where did that come from?? i'm sure he was just asking you to explain yourself. to be honest i haven't a clue what you mean either unless you're talking about some random invitation to treat senario...are you? maybe i'm missing something....
