    Hi everyone.

im in a bit of a fix at the minute and i was wondering if people could give me their opinion on this.

Im going to be buying a car for the wife in the next 10 days. budget is about 2000 euros cash. (have budgeted for insurance and tax exclusive of that price already).

my biggest requirement for the car is that it has to be short, that is, less than 3800mm to fit our car park space - as i already have a longer 4 door saloon.

The best car (and ive searched on parkers fact and figures) is a toyota yaris at 3690mm.

However, looking at ads now for a while and drove a couple, for the price i am at, they are not in good shape. some people are selling 99 yarii with 180 000 miles at 2000 euros which i find is ridiculous.

ive looked at an 01 for 2000 but that was not in great nick either, with the clutch and brakes being dodgy. Also, most yarii are terra specced - so not very inviting.

My next options had been clio (01/02) as well as 206's (01-03) but they are longer but also have a lot of reliability issues. my wife is not used to dublin, so i dont want her to be stuck somewhere and not know where she is at if the car decides to breakdown.

Ive started to consider a Polo (00-02) model. they seem to be in the price range. ( less than 2000 is good as well, id rather not spend everything if i can avoid it).

the polo comes in at 3740mm, which is just a tad longer than the yaris.

How do people feel about the yaris vs the polo, counting the fact that at 2000 euros, the yarii are not in good nick?

im trying to limit buying in dublin/leinster area. i cannot see myself driving down to cork or up to donegal to see a car and not sure whether i am going to buy or not, i dont have much spare time, working 5/7 9am to 7pm.

buying from a dealer would be better due to comeback, but not all stories are good however.

its really trying to find one of those 2 at that price in good nick, but getting people's opinions on the polo, as people have only good things to say about the yaris, and ive read a lot on it.

also, if anybody can come up with other suggestions that are less than 3800mm and less than 2000 euros, id be grateful.

(ahhh, if only mini's were cheaper! they are 3670mm!).

    Thanks again

Fiat Panda for me, €2K gets an 04 or 05, only 3538mm long.

thanks for that. ive had a look at review over the years. they arent too bad. but i think the wife would take a known brand over a fiat at all times, even though the fiat is 2004.

fiats, where we come from are hated, despised, and generally NOT imported into that country

Does this bring back bad memories?

But in terms of helpful comments, would a mazda demio be much longer?

    Thanks, yeah fiats,hmmmmm

Demio = 3940mm so a no go. Plus they are like little vans

I wouldnt bother with a Polo/Yaris. You are paying a lot of cash for a small badly equipped car. I would have the Fiat too.

Your forgetting the one that would get my vote- Ford Ka. They are a great fun car to drive, very simple to fix if anything goes wrong and should be v cheap. The pre 2002 engine is acient but suits the car well and has plenty of poke for town, post 2002 are a bit better. From 2000 most of them had power steering. I would expect you could get a 2002 with less than 80k on the clock for close to your budget

i know the seat arosa sounds good on paper and looks good too and its small to boot.

but i think its "too small". i know i am contradicting myself, but its a lupo. i dont want to go that small :(

sorry lads, i appreciate the suggestions, but i think the arosa is out (As the lupo).

    Corsa B - 3,725mm - this model finished in 00 or 01
3door ones with a spoiler are not bad looking. Cheap. I know some people don't like em and say they give trouble, but I'm guessing you know someone who knows Opels inside out...
Corsa C is just a little too long...

    Peugeot 106 is only 3564mm.

You could even have a GTi for €2K!

I had also thought of the 106,but ruled it out after seeing the Arosa/Lupo comments. I'd hate to crash or be crashed into in a 106, the wheel arch being so close to my feet made me nervous..

    i see your point.

however, ive had a 205 before and even though the 106 is newer, its very basic. very very basic.

some level of comfort would be good, and its more metallic/aluminium/lighter than the arosa!

    appreciate the thought though.

    looking like yaris again.

none worth it on donedeal yet. one on adverts, but gone already.
