Saorview queries

    Hi all,

I recently bought a walkers saorview box for my parents and installed it. They also have a sky box which they use to get all the free to air channels. I have two issues.

    Issue 1
Is there any way I can set up the saorview channels as a channel like analogue rte1 rte2 etc. I'm able to do this with the sky channels and my parents find it much handier than having to switch to av mode to get the saorview channels.

    Issue 2
Also the tv they have only has one scart connection and no hdmi connection. I have bought an adaptor that allows me place five scart connections into one. The problem is when the sky box is on it scrambles saorview when you try and watch it. Is there anything that can be done to stop it scrambling?

I know these queries are small but my parents are retired now and don't take to new technology well. Any help would be greatly appreciatated.

Don't know exactly what you're trying to do here as on a Sky box the channels are in order as per the EPG and it just happens that RTE1, 2 etc are the first few channels, BBC you'll note is channel 141 for example.

    Issue 2

You don't have to set the Sky box up via Scart - it sounds like your parents aren't too fussed over quality so set it up on an analogue channel, via the aerial out on the Sky box which is usually channel no.68 in the search mode on the TV (you can adjust that if needed). Thus the sky box could be on C5 for example. The Walker then could go directly to the scart on the TV

    :p

    Issue 1
The sky box they have only has uk channels with no sky card. When I was referring to channel list I was refering to the analogue channels they they have. The channel list is Ch1-rte1, Ch2-rte2 Ch3-Tv3, Ch4-TG4 and 5-Sky Channels.

What I'm wondering is there any way I can make Channel 6-the saorview channels like the sky channels being channel 5. You're right quality is not an issue.

    Issue 2
From what you've said it seems the sky channels are already set up to come from the aerial out on the sky box.

Therefore I shouldn't need to run the sky through the scart and that issue is sorted.

Thanks for your help on this. Please excuse my ignorance just trying to make things as easy as possible for my parents.

I am not familiar with the Walker but I suspect the Aerial RF out put is 'loop through' which means an analogue signal from the Walker is not generated. You can check this by leaving the Walker in set up mode and doing a channel scan on the TV. If it doesn't find it, Scart only I'm afraid
    :(

Hi all - I could be in a bit of trouble. I own a B&B in Galway and purchased a number of TV's (32'' Samsung LED) from Amazon UK in Feb 2011. Up until recently the Saorview channels have worked fine but since the official launch the signal has become choppy at times. Is this because TV's I purchased are not MPEG4 compatible. The funny thing is, sometimes the picture is fine. What is my best course of action. All help would be much appreciated. Cheers Mick.

I've a somewhat similar issue to mickrick1, ever since the switch over to live my reception has gone from perfect to intermittent at best. Sometimes it'll be grand but more often than not it seems to suffer from a lot of interference and it will completely lose signal at times.

Have you a booster on the aerial signal. I had a similar problem, which was solved by turning the booster down to the minimum.

The tvs should be fine. There may be a choice of transmitter at your location, check the coverage map, as there might be a better option than the one you're currently receiving from.

But as the TV's came from Amazon UK I take it they are MPEG2 compatible and not MPEG4. I hope I'm wrong on this.

If they were not MPEG4 you would never have seen a picture at all.

Thanks for that Gerry. I bow to your superior knowledge. I just wondered because signal was fine before official launch of Saorview and now the service is very much hit and miss. Could it be an analogue signal I am receiving? I have done a manual channel store on all local transmitters but the only one which stores the channels is Maghera on 48 (which gives me 18). My problem is because we have a B&B our guests are starting to complain about loss of picture and sometimes loss of all digital channels, so it is more than just an irritation, it could actually have a negative effect on my business.

I didnt have a powered booster just one of those one4all aerials but the tv itself had a booster option so I turned that off. Hopefully that'll fix it.

Your aerial is more than likely on Maghera then; what are TV3 & TG4 analogue like?

The tv 'booster' option is most likely to provide power for a remotely located amplifier.
You shouldn't really expect reliable reception from an indoor aerial.

Problem sorted. I checked aerial in roof space and it had been moved when one of my kids was up there. Saorview now perfect but analogue signal not so good. Such is life. Thanks Gerry for advice.
