I've booked an NCT test. Due to availability, the test will not be for about a week after my current NCT disc runs out. If I'm stopped in the week in between but have the NCT letter, should all be ok?
What happens if a car requires to come back for anything minor or major, can a car be driven in the mean time between one test and a re-test?

Just keep a copy of the nooking letter with you in case you're stopped. Don't worry about it.

mine failed on a couple of minor thing's & i got 4 weeks to get them fixed.Doesn't cost anything to bring back,he just looks to make sure the work was done then issues the cert

If machinery is required for the retest there is a charge of 28 euro. For some minor problems there is no fee. They will let you know at the time if it'll be a fee retest or not

OP bring around a copy of the nct booking with you and you should be fine. And you should be fine to drive in the meantime if the problems aren't too serious...

Thanks both for the info. Between failing and passing though, if you were stopped and the old NCT disc is just out of date, if stopped, is there a possibility of fine/penalty points?

I booked a month before the first NCT was due on my wifes car the nearest date we could get a weekend booking was August. although we did not get a booking letter just an email.

You could get a test within a week from today if you really wanted to.

    I can confirm that.
If someone really wants to, it's possible to get a appointment for NCT fairly quickly.
All you need to do is know exactly how NCT booking work, spend whole weekend reading motors forum, make plenty of phone calls, and use all your smartness. Then you will get NCT quick.

Sadly other people who don't wish to do it, will have to suffer.

That confirms the whole NCT booking system is absolutely crap.

Doesn't sound too smart to me. Does sound a bit thick though.

One phone call to the booking office is all it takes ffs!

    Sounds a bit extreme

I just book a date and then check online every morning for cancellations, the last car I bought I got it on a Tuesday evening and had it in for a test the following morning

Unfortunatley I work outside of the country 5 days a week so could only look at a weekend booking in the online system. plus my wife was unwilling to bring the car during the week for the test.:(

First of all booking any date is not always available.
I rang them last year in the beginning of July and was told there is nothing available in the next 6 months, and they don't take any booking in advence more than 6 months.
So as a result she was not able to offer me an appointment at all. I was told to ring again few days later. So I did and was told the same. Same story 3 times.

Then, even if you get a booking, not everyone knows how to use internet, and how to check for cancellations online. Not everybody has a broadband available in the area they live. And no everyone is willing to spend fortune on everyday phonecalls for few weeks or months.
I think the whole reservation system is a complete joke.

That was because some politician announced that from then on there would be a €1,500 fine, 5 penalty points and your car would be crushed (or some details like that). It scared the bejaysis out of every Tom, Dick and Harry who had never done any NCT before on their old cars and they were looking for NCT bookings en masse.

When I rang the NCT around May 20th of this year in the middle of the 2 year changeover madness (last chance a 10 year old car could get a 2 year NCT), looking for an appointment on either 27th May or 31st of May, they had no bookings available. In Dublin. They still did have a slot available in Carlow on 31st of May, which I took.

Your post here made me think that maybe now it's not that bad as I thought.
My wife's car is due NCT on end of November, so as it can be done 90 days in advance (end of August) I thought that I chance to book it now.
First I tried online booking facility, which told me my car was not due NCT.
Then I tried ringing them. She took my details, and proposed an appointment for 15th July. I said that my car is only due by end of November, so as far as I know it can be only tested from end of August onwards.
She agreed and told me that in that case it's too early to book.
I asked why can't I book it already now for end of August.
She said OK, and gave me appointment on first possible day (28th August).

So it looks like at the moment system works quite OK.
