Been to the Algarve 7 times now. There's plenty to do - it all depends on what you want. Loads of golf, beaches, excellent restaurants.
You'll find the usual water parks, markets etc. Best thing I went to was Zoomarine in Guia, Albufeira. It has the shows (Dolphin, Seal, Birds etc) a small fairground for kids, water slides, large swimming pools and a superb 4d cinema show that has to be seen to be believed. Book online before you go to save money.

Overall its a great place, much more relaxed than Spain and its not overly expensive.

It's a very nice country with quite a range. Where to go depends on the sort of holiday you are after. A trip between Lisbon and Porto would be very interesting from a cultural point of view: Lisbon itself is a very nice city with an attractive old centre, historical trams, inexpensive for a European capital and with fantastic restaurants. Then you have Sintra nearby, Obidos and Coimbra on the way, the whole Port industry in and around Porto itself which is fascinating and then Braga and Guimares just north of Porto.

Didn't like Lisbon at all. The place seems very run down. Never felt comfortable walking about, there seemed to be dodgy guys hanging around everywhere. The aquarium is very good. It is very cheap and there are some wonderful little towns and villages nearby. There are some lovely restaurants but finding a good pub was hard work. Sintra is a beautiful little spot.

It depends on what you are into I guess... I had a client in Lisbon for a few years and so was over frequently and grew to like the place. Baixa and the Barrio Alto in the centre are both attractive, each in their own way, then there is the castle up on the hill, the old touristic tram up to the cathedral, restaurants from old mama places in Barrio Alto to slick modern ones on the seafront.

I don't deny the place has a run down feel with a lot of crumbling buildings (and pavements) but to me that lent it a certain gritty charm. You are right about the dodgy characters and there is a bad drugs problem in the city but I wouldn't say it is any more dangerous than Madrid and probably less so than Barcelona. It is well worth a couple of days visit.
