    Hi,

I'm really hoping someone will be able to help out with this, I'm at wits end.

My brother's kid thought it would be funny to change his password on his (my brother's) 3gs, and rather than use common sense he ploughed on and repeatedly entered it enough times to lock out the phone.

I'm the 'tecchy' of the family, and I am fairly familiar with iphones having done numerous jailbreaks/restores before. So I told him no bother, I'll have that sorted for you in no time, thinking I'll find a way to bypass the password, or at worst restore it back to factory.

Skip on to a day later and I'm red in the face swearing and blinding at this damn phone. I'm in a serious pickle now because after throwing everything I have at it I have its stuck in such a way i can't do anything with it. As I said, pride is at stake here for one thing as I'm supposed to be good at these things, but also I've now messed up the phone by trying everything including jailbreaking.

    So as it stands :
I can't tell him to bring it back to Apple because included in the things I've tried is jailbreaking, so I doubt they'll help.
It won't restore to standard factory firmware via itunes for some reason
It won't restore to custom firmware.
It won't let you enter the password

So the phone is now way worse than when he gave it to me.

I have tried using redsn0w, using a custom firmware, which looked like it was working, it went through the jailbreak procedure, but when all was finished it was still at "iphone is locked". However that proves the phone is ok hardware wise as it had no problem with all of that.
I've tried tinyumbrella but I have no shsh blobs saved for that device obviously so that's no use.
    I've tried I-Reb, no use.
I've tried redirecting gs.apple.com to saurik's server for a custom/factory firmware via itunes, no use.Gives the error (either 1161 or 3194 can't rem which)
I've tried pwnage tool, no use.
I've tried standard restore via itunes (with the gs.apple.com line removed from hosts), no use gives error (either 1161 or 3194)

I have tried all these in both restore mode and DFU mode.

As far as I can see I'm completely out of options and am going to have to just swallow my pride and say sorry - I've been beaten by an apple product.

So any help or ideas at all would be more than welcome.

    Cheers

You probably won't get much help here. It looks a mite suspicious, only joined a month, and looking for help to get around the iPhone lock. Did the kid not know the password he had changed to?

Although there's always someone willing to make it easier to sell on stolen phones, obviously:rolleyes:

How does only being joined a month matter? Yes I appreciate that any questions about getting around a passcode looks dodgy but this is not, I have the damn passcode, I just don't have the option of entering it anymore.

No the phone is not stolen. Yes we know what password it was changed to,The brother did not know at the time it was changed and rather than use his brain and stop putting it in wrong after numerous attempts he just continued on, therefore locking it. Again to those who insinuate the phone is stolen.. I have the password it was changed to, that's the annoying part about it, I can't feckin put it in.

If anyone has a suggestion of how to get it back to asking for the passcode that would be just as useful, in case yer worried about helping out a criminal or something.

My understanding (my boss managed a similar trick with the aid of his kids a few months back) is that if the phone is reconnected to an itunes instance it was previously sync'ed with, it will return to a state where you can enter the passcode...

    Aha! Cheers Paddy,

That's where I may be going wrong so, I've been connecting it to my own pc , never even occurred to me to use the brother's one.

I swear to fneck if it turns out to be this easy after all I've tried I'll..I'll...well I'll feel a bit of a plonker to be honest. Sometimes the easy solutions are the best tho.

Hopefully that does the job, I'll give that a shot this evening and see how it goes. Fingers crossed.

He seems genuine, not everyone is a thief dude. I had an iPhone 4 stolen from me, it sucks. It's a board to give help if you can. Anyways, my suggestion was obviously of no use to him anyway.

Oh hey IamMetalDave sorry forgot to respond to you , thanks for your suggestion, I'll be trying that next if Paddy's suggestion doesn't work, and as you said I was just looking for advice, got a bit riled up when I read whiterebel's post but I can see it from that point of view alright, should have probably stated that I had the passcode in my first post.

Anywho cheers, I'll be back either way in case yer interested to know if that works or not.

You can only restore to the latest firmware without modification of your hosts file and in dfu mode. Ive had a few like this and the worked fine.

Unfortunatly Paddy your suggestion didn't work, it's still the same- can't put in the passcode and can't restore it or do anything. I've wasted enough time on the thing now so I'm just going to give up, do the right thing and blame the whole thing on my nephew.(well it was his fault) I told the brother just send it off to apple to get it fixed, take a chance that they won't spot that it's jailbroken. Cheers anyways for the help.

IF They do spot it, they'll just return it and his warranty is gone for life on the device.

Could you not just use the PUK code from the carrier

worked fine for me no jailbreaking or messing around with firmware.

Are you using an origional apple sync cable ? I had the same problem a couple of months ago and for some reason it wouldnt restore untill I used the cable that came with the fone (ive a few spare ebay ones I was trying) , Read it on the net and couldnt believe it worked , might be worth a shot ?
