A friend of mine has to select the winners prize for his Captains Day in the Golf Club. Any views on an appropriate prize with a value not exceeding €600 ???. Novel or conventional ideas are welcome

I've always found John Tierney of TGC Gift Company very good. They specialise in golf prizes and could be worth a try:

A bottle of this would be nice and unsually for a golf prize

NB: Not to be consumed with a Saturday night Domino's pizza :D

God they look awful, another vase or salad bowl is just what the golfing world needs.
OP whatever you do, don't get crystal, it's dated and is the lazy mans option, go for something like an ipad or gps system.

iPad2 for ~€500 would be interesting alright because it could be sold on if not needed...

Yup I agree with the Ipad idea. Even though I personally dislike them anyone who wins one is going to be a happy camper. :)

Another vote for the Ipad 2

This is a good prize if you want to restrict it to Golf Gear. Easy to sell on if the winner doesn't need one.

Catalonia golf offer a trip to barcalona with 3 rounds of competitive golf at el prat, pga, and some other course. cost is 450 without flights, good prize i was robbed of because i am a student that won a mens event that won with -1gross and not allowed win 1st prize.

    Actually that's a sh1t prize.

First have you still have to stump up for flights to collect your prize and second why would you go on your own? In reality you'd end up paying for another trip and 2 flights and splitting it halfway with your mate/wife (if your tight ;)).

As for the TGC Gift Company suggestion, I'd rather not have won if I was presented with some of that overpriced tat.

Agree the ipad is the perfect prize. All the other ones mentioned are crap imho. The ipad is easily sold at close to their cost price if unopened. However most people would probably keep it. I know I would!

I disagree on the iPad type ideas for this.
Personally I think those sorts of prizes are perfect for opens etc, but for the majors in your own club you want something that you are going to have till you drop.

Crystal or silver trophy etc are much better imo. As long as the captain does go for something extremely weird around this idea then I think you get something that most people will like and hang onto.

In 3 years who is going to ask you "oh wow, what did you win *that* ipad for?"
For me thats what you want from a prize and thats what I remember from seeing my old man arrive home and add some new prize to the sideboard.

Nobody wants crystal etc. Well nobody I know anyway. The iPad is a good idea but they could also get a small trophy/crystal thingy with 'Captains Prize Winner 2011' inscribed on it.

In 25 years time I think people will look back fondly at their trophies and not even remember some ipod or camera that they once won.

I agree there is some merit in what you're saying about having a lasting mometo of the occasion, but crystal and silver are not the answer, they are dated and are the lazy mans options.
I think with a little bit of imagination and work, a suitable prize can be acquired, e.g last year the captain of our club commissioned a local artist to make a painting of our 15th green from an aspect people wouldn't usually see it and tbh it turned out fantastic.
I also think pottery from artists like Stephen Pearce and Louis Mulcahy would make excellent prizes and there are a plenty more artist/potters with amazing pieces available, if people just make the extra bit of effort to shop for them.

No they won't, it's clutter and not exactly a claret jug. Most clubs normally have the winner's of the captains prize on a plaque on the wall. That's vain enough for me without having some crap trophy lying around gathering dust or in storage.

I think it's an age thing too, I dunno anyone under the age of 35 who has any interest in having silver or crystal on display their houses. Personally I think it's dated and tacky, something Pat Butcher would have in her sitting room ;).

This is exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about, something that is more meaningfull as a prize rather than just a thing.

but its as close as you are going to get to winning a claret jug. Why do they give medals at the olympics and not ipads?

Your comparing winning an Olympic medal to winning captains prize at your club? Being one of the best in the world in your event to winning a club competition with the help of a handicapping system (probably not even the best player in your club)?

Seriously, you need to ban youself

    Too right.
I've won a presidents before and it was a designer vase on a pedestal and has the inscription on it and year and club etc.
Anyone can go out and buy an ipad. You have to WIN a trophy.
Thats why trophys are the way they are.
In 20 years time I don't want to be looking at the equivilant of an atari in a box in the attic and say "Look grandkids, I won this as a presidents prize back in 2011".

Keep the crystal but make them functional if needs be.

    Yours etc,
    GSH.

You're just making his point even better. Deadly.

An inscribed golf statue. Afterall, the winner will have it in his/her prize cabinet or on the mantelpiece for year's to come.

After re-reading the thread with GreeBo's comments I must say he dose still have a point. Why can't an Ipad be giving with a small piece of inscribed crystal. Something useful and something to remember the victory
