Hey guys I'm lookig for advice on what are the cheapest cars to buy/insure and just some general advice . I'm sure I'm repeating other threads and I have looked through a few but I'm still looking for some more answers . So I'm 17 and am looking at suitable cars to buy and insure . The plan is ; buy a cheap car and get it insured by my mam with me as an added driver . On her current car ( a for fusion 06 1.4 litre) it would cost 1100 to add me to the insurance . I'm not in dire need to be driving soon so I'm currently saving to afford car and insurance . Some things I wanted to know are does engine size effect insurance cost ? I'm planning on getting a low litre engine size anyway to cut down on running costs but the 1 litre range of cars seems to be very limited so I've been looking at some cars with bigger litre engines . Also what kind of cars are good to be looking at ? I've been told that always go with a Japanese car as other manufacturer's cars parts are very expensive to replace and since the car I buy will most likely be around 10 or so years old I should'nt buy them so i should stay away from citreons etcetera . Also how to choose a car with low tax would be helpful . Thanks for all and any advice its all appreciated . :)

1100 is actually not that bad, I got quoted as a named driver on the same car for 8 months for 1388. Anyway isn't it impossible for a person to hold two policies at once ? If your mam is insured on her car then she wont be able to be the main policy holder on your own ? Always how I thought it worked.

Okay, I suppose being 17 and on a learner permit 1.0 - 1.2 is where you'd what to be looking I wouldn't go any higher tbh. To start of a Micra would be ideal, not my cup of tea (I'm a Fiat person) but my mate owns one and he's same age as yourself. You could pick a decent 99-01 up for roughly €1000 on Donedeal. Tax on these is 172 per annum.

If you were willing to go higher in engine size a Ford Fiesta 1.25 or Fiat Punto 16v (rare unless you were to go for a sporting but you do want to keep the insurance down) would be my choices.

When I went to get my quotes of Aviva I was told that there wasn't much in the difference between 1L and 1.2 so that something that you would be able to find out for yourself when you have the golden pages on your lap and a phone to your ear :P But if I was to recommend a cheap insurance company either Aviva or Britton insurance is what I'd say as well as most people around here :). However a third party, fire & theft policy in your own name would mean four figures and the first one starting with 2.

For the motor tax rates you can see here yourself : http://www.environ.ie/en/LocalGovernment/MotorTax/MotorTaxRates/MotorTaxRatesBasedonEngineSize/

At the risk of sounding like I'm contradicting everything Mr Jingles has just said, my recent experiences have been a little different.

I was getting quotes on cars ranging from 1 litre to 1.3 for my girlfriend starting driving. 23, no ncb earned, provisional licence. The difference, on average, between a 1 litre and a 1.3 was about 300 euro. I also found Aviva, Britton (as well as most companies it has to be said) reluctant to quote/ridiculous quotes. I wouldn't recommend these companies as a complete beginner (at least for normal sized quotes). Your cheapest option is more than likely going to be Quinn Direct.

Your mother can also hold two policies at the same time if she likes, but her earned NCB can only apply to one car. Some companies will mirror that NCB onto another car (I have heard Quinn Direct also do this).

My advice is get a 1 litre (something like a VW Polo), insure it yourself with your mother as named driver and get your full licence asap to bring down your cost quickly. If this is cost prohibitive, then see if your mother can mirror her NCB and take out a 2nd policy on your car, and add you as a named driver. I don't think you can earn a No Claims Bonus yourself this way though, which may come back and bite you a little bit cost-wise in a few years, when you want your own policy.

Ahh thats how it works, I always knew it wasn't as simple as having two policies and its happy days but I wasn't fully sure. Thanks.
