    Hi all,

I'm coming from a cycling background but trying to do some running. I go to killiney hill pk for a run on a regular basis. Anyways, to the point.

Picked up a nice new top (fonhill) and shorts last week and went out this evening for a run. It was pissing down with rain which I didn't mind but when I came home I noticed two red blothes on my top. Lift up the top & yes, 2 bleeding nipples. Any ideas how to deal with this as it's never happened before. Does Vaseline do the trick.

    Ps. Its quite sore

oodles of vaseline should do the trick.
some people use tape or plasters, i hear zinc tape is particularly good, prob best to shave first tho.
although, tbh im surprised you bled after an evening run, normally it would only happen on longer runs, it may be that the top needs to be worn in or just may not agree with you.

The fact that it was lashing down wouldnt have helped you either, wet top rubbing off ur nipples is bit rougher on the skin than a dry one. As previous poster said, vaseline helps wit the problem.

Did you wash the top before wearing it? There might have been something on it (preservatives) that you reacted to when it got rained on...

I don't suffer (thank god) but bodyglide is very popular with marathon runners and tri-athletes, and can be used with wetsuits.

Good luck with it. Lots of savlon and moisturiser for the next few days.

    vaseline

Two bits of cotton wool held down with micropore tape does the trick for me... but usually it would take quite a long run before it's an issue.

Take one plaster, cut off both adhesive sides and apply to each nipple.

Vaseline will stain your t-shirt. Something like bodyglide is better. You'll get it in most running/cycling shops.

Sport shield is better than body glide, it's a roll on. It doesn't smell like body glide does.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 100 ✭✭napathy

I use bodyglide as it lasts for ages and Vaseline seems to go after about an hour, never noticed the smell though...

Sorry but couldnt help laugh at the thread name! although I have been victim to sensitive nipples while running I find it comes from wearing cheap/rough fabric singlets/tops.

    Do people us base layers?

I find if I use them I've no problems but if I dont it can get bloody and/or sore!

It doesnt even take long. I did a 10k on Monday and I was read raw

    +1 on the base layers

I would get the same problem from a 10k or sometimes even an 8k. Once I started wearing a base layer there's no more friction so no longer have a problem.
I wear them training or racing to avoid the pain in the shower afterwards.

to take the thread slightly off topic (timely as it is though after the rain during the docklands run the other night), what's Killiney Hill park like to run ? I love going out there for walks and stuff, but I always thought it was quite small. Is there a good route around/through it ? How long ?

I used to wear a base layer when I started running last winter and had no problem with the dreaded raw nipples. Once the weather got warmer I had to ditch it for the reason outlined above. First night out without the base layer and the nipples got a right goin over. Lesson learned and vaseline is now liberally applied before every run.

Well just in from the same route as Tuesday but without the rain and glad to say my nipples are in one piece & no blood. Thank god. Although me bleeding legs. Now what can I do bout that

Where do you buy sport sheild please? Wonder could I use it with wetsuit to get it off or for friction around the neck?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,034 ✭✭✭griffin100

KY jelly on the collar of the wetsuit will stop friction burns on your neck.

Baby oil on the arm and leg cuffs helps get the suit off faster.

U can park up or down road from it. There is various loops around it with steep hills so depending how you run it really. Up over the two hills down onto vico and up other side is about 50 mins ish. Not alit of traffic and great views

Thanks for that. I did hear that baby oil will wreck the wetsuit though. Do you know if this is true? Cheers again.

I've summer, winter and frosty base layers.

I've a mixture of Nike, canterbrey and under armour and will pick one based on what I'm doing.

I'm so used to them it's a pain to run without them if I forget them or there is no clean ones

the tape they use in hospitals always work for me,never falls of,can b a bit sore taking of when you have a hairy chest, but better than raw nipples.

tape is great. never go without it. I had x's done with black tape one day. changed my mind about going for a run and when to shop to look for running jacket. was taking one off over my heat and my top went up and showed by taped nipples to the shop. must say the wife was pretty embarresed :) Kinky

The worst nipple chafing I ever got was as a result of a wet t-shirt. The water weight made it stick to my chest and the constant motion caused it to rub up and down.

For me the easiest way to avoid it was just a plaster over each nipple. If you're hairy chested though a shave around the nipple might be in order to ensure they stick.

You can use vaseline and plasters. A small dab of vaseline on the nipple and a plaster over it as well. Will stop the stain on the gear and gives you the best of both worlds.

Funny this came up, had a similar problem just yesterday...

I was putting it down to the cheap knock off of a Ronhill top that you wore:D, but if its happening with different tops I think you're skin is just a wee bit sensitive. Luckily I've never suffered but I've seen the after effects and it ain't nice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 268 ✭✭get on your bike

Hey. Cheers for reply. It was the same top as I wore tonight as a few weeks ago and raw tonight again but Hav being wearing a diff one in de meantime with no worries. So it's prob the top. Are they your thoughts

What do people use to treat the chafed areas afterwards ? When it's too late for prevention I mean ?
I went out for a run on Saturday evening about 5 o' clock in Dublin. About a mile in, it started raining. Then it started lashing. Then torrential. Then biblical. Was running for about 2 hours in that rain and although I didn't really feel anything at the time (probably due to being completely soaked and freezing), when I got home and peeled my clothes off to find a lot of blood on a very sensitive part of my body. Jebus, I thought chafed nipples were sore in the shower, but this was tear-inducing.

I've been using sudocrem to try to clear it up, but there doesn't appear to be much improvement. Any suggestions ??

baby power/ caldaseen (not sure of the corrcet spelling), i find is great help dry it out and stop infections

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 881 ✭✭✭JosDel

I had a much heavier top on Sunday for my long run and had bleeding nipples even though I was using 2toms which is very good in dry conditions with a lighter top..

Yep, do that too. They just cover the nipple too, so you don't have to rip through lots of chest hair taking them off.

kinesiology tape i find the best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

I use tape on the nipples (I think it's called Leukosilk), but I would not for the life of me tape up the nether regions. Imagine pulling that tape off

I find my Garmin HR strap carefully positioned does the job as well as tape :)
