Hello. I hope I have come to the right place for advice, basically I am looking to start up a small business I have around 2 grand to get me started. Its not my first business, I have previously imported cars and cloths aswell as other items. What I am looking for is some direction I am normally good with ideas but my mind has just been blank lately. Its kind of hard to explain does anybody have any websites they would like to share. Which would show whats popular with consumers at the moment, or any websites which may be good for small time entrepreneurs to read. Thanks.

    Hi there,

Basically sit down at a table, write down all of your interests in life on a page and then expand on these and see if there are any gaps, once you have an interest for something you will usually pick out a gap in the market.

In my opinion starting a business from scratch usually (but not always) follows this broad pattern:

Generate idea ==> Research & establish the market exists ==> Construct a theoretical Business Model ==> Test the Business Model externally for Commerciality / Viability ==> Write a Business Plan ==> Source funding if you need it ==> Market it and Launch

Of course many take a different route. You say you are at Stage 1, however you seem to be in Stage 2. Not necessarily a problem as you can blend the two but as ssbob says, best to start with what you are good at or your own interests and expand on those.

I would say I am not sure you will get a queue of people who will tell you where you can make loads of money as that could mean they will make less.

Google or another Search Engine will also help with the early stage you are at and may trigger the ideas you are searching for. Finally, be wary of 'Get Rich Quick' options.

Can't agree more with this , if you work on something that genuinely drives you and that you have a passion for you will be able to find that gap and develop it a hell of alot quicker than if you need to learn about the product/service/industry from scratch.

I agree that it is better to aim to find work in an area that interests you, but more importantly you need to take a good look at yourself and decide what skills or knowledge you have that other people will pay for.

With your budget you will not be able to employ staff or even buy in skills so you will have to do the work yourself. Trading (buying and selling) is a good way to make money with a relatively small budget and since you have done it before this would be a good place to start.
