    Hello all,

I have trained in the UK and have an interview in the coming week in a Catholic school.

I can imagine they will ask about how being a christian benefits the children, or what is meant by a cathollic ethos etc.

Does anyone know of any likely questions or good answers that might help me get over the line??

    Advice is greatly appraeciated!

There is really a twofold answer to that question. The first is the most tangible one which deals with the fact that Catholic Schools in England perform better than other faith and state sponsored denominational counterparts. This is especially true in the post 16 age range. (if you would like to pm me i can email you some interesting articles that have been published in peer reviewed, secular journals)

The second is the faith dimension which is easy if you are a person of faith. Talking about how your faith informs ur decision making process and how it informs ur teaching philosophy. Throwing in some of the traditional Catholic education traditions such as the Jesuits and Salesians is pretty good.
Talking about the gospel values is always a crowd pleaser. The quote from St Francis is always a good one too "Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.”

If your a practicing Catholic dont be afraid to say it. If your a disillusioned Catholic who has been affected by the scandals in the Church they will also appreciate the honesty of you saying that your in the middle of your own faith journey but appreciate the importance of respecting and encouraging children in theirs.

Come on, the idea of these type of schools is that you share in the ethos. If you are trying to find the the right answer to "get you over the line" the place isn't for you. I know that's easy to say when you already have a job, but you shouldn't be trying to fool them.

Never mind the catechism quiz, I would be more worried about a spelling test if I were you.

So anyway... have a look on their website about their ethos (does it relate to the school motto). Find out a little bit about the religious order, does it tie in with other schools abroad who share the same order e.g fundraising/charity work (schools like to post this in their news section). Maybe be able to talk a little bit about what (if any!!) religious order the school you went to is.

As a matter of interest let us know after you've done the interview.

A difficult question I received lately was, How does the ethos of this school differ from that of other schools ? ( i.e Ceist School v ETB school) Anyone have any pointers on how someone would go about answering it ? I made a right mess of it !

I would be interested in answers to this too. I was always under the impression that what schools wrote in their mission statements etc were very similar, and the ethos of the school related very much to the tradition in the particular school and the personnel there. So I don't know how a body is supposed to know the differences between schools - holistic approach, care for the individual, christian values, preference for the poor, reach their full potential etc etc etc.
