Hey guys I'm doing a triathlon in the next few weeks and I've been training my swimming and found that I'm much faster on the back crawl compared to the front. So does anyone think it would be a better idea to do the back crawl instead of front?

You might find it difficult to ensure you are going in a straight line (I assume it's an OW swim). The last time I encountered someone swimming back crawl in a race they were swimming perpendicular to to my path and I was going on the right direction (sort of).

That said if it is a river or lake swim and you've a nearby bank to judge and adjust off it might be possible. But if it's a sea swim or in the middle of a lake I'd say it would be more difficult.

I wouldnt recommend for open water swim for the reason already given. The only person I saw ever doing backcrawl in a Tri was a female in a pool triathlon and unfortunately she had a Janet Jackson style wardrobe malfunction of epic proportions. So precautions maybe required.

Have you tried this in the open water? If you can handle the waves, and can sight, then I'd say go for it. I saw 1 or 2 in tri Athy doing it. Just start at the back.

Yeah it's in open water in pretty much the middle of the lake. Have a bank on the side for about one third of it. I learned to swim in a lake though and was always better at back rather than front crawl and I do have a good judge of direction but obviously sight is a problem especially if I had to turn. Choppiness isn't a problem for me seeing I learned in a lake. Umm still not sure. Maybe I could alternate between the two and use the back crawl to pick up spped or if I'm getting tired? Would that work? Wardrobe malfunctions won't be a problem as I'll have a wet suit (thankfully :D)
