8 years ago I once paid €5500 for insurance on a 97 saxo vts. I had written off two cars in the year before and needed to be on the road :(

    I know I was mad.

IIRC when I was 17 I badly wanted to be insured on the folks 1.4 Astra, so badly I paid an extra €2400. I even had my full licence

That covered me for a grand total of 6 months () until the policy renewed.

IR£2500 on a Rover 214 with a full licence at 20 with 2 years NCB. Was only IR£1588 two years before that with 0 NCB and a provisional at 18. Funny business.

€1480 with Hibernian at the time (now Aviva). Had a Daewoo Lanos..... I know, I know :)
Changed to a Punto 2 years later and the insurance was €500 fully comp with them. Had an accident and car was written off (no fault accident I might add) and the insurance went to €1500 the following year! Asked why and got the anwer of "Everyone's insurance has gone up this year". Said good luck to them and changed insurance for €800 instead.
    Now paying €700 for a Volvo S60.

when i was 19 my mother or father didnt drive but i was quoted 3300 punts!! so i drove to work with no insurance until i could afford it while been on 250 quid a week in a nissan micra..
    Insurance is a scam...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,844 ✭✭✭Jimdagym

Bought a 1.2 Clio and was quoted 4500. Started paying monthly and on the second month passed the test and it dropped to 2500. Kept insurance shopping and two months later walked away from the policy and got a new one for 1200.
Was cheaper to walk away and lose 5 months Ncb.
Now, 7 years later its fully comp with Ncb protection for €350 on a 1.4 megane. At least turning 30 has some advantages!

It's a shame you weren't caught and prosecuted. Driving without insurance is one of the few crimes that the judicial system punishes appropriately.

Ah yeah, motor insurance for younger people in Ireland, a highly emotive subject at the best of times. While I won't condone driving without insurance I will empathise with a younger person who does so in order to genuinely make ends meat and who genuinely can't afford the premium. Blame the high premia as opposed to the young motorist is the was I sort of look at it. Young scobies who go out acting the maggot with cars, now they are another matter entirely.

Younger people are subsidising older people when it come to medical insurance so should the same logic follow through with motor insurance? You might argue that medical insurance is a necessity and having a car isin't...but if you live in the back ar$e of beyond and want to get a job and make some sort of living, believe me more often than not a car is an necessity.

For myself when I started driving I paid circa 2,300 euro mark in a Renault Megavan (ball of junk by the way) with Quinn Direct. I was 20 and on full license. If I was on a provisional and insuring the lowest category passenger car at the time, even a 1.0 Micra say, I would have had to stump up 2 grand more....no thanks I would sooner walk.

Most I even paid was in 2001 when I paid £1200 to insure a 998cc Seat Ibiza. Damn you "Celtic Tiger" :(

Could drop to around 1700, how old are you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,721 ✭✭✭Al Capwned

IR£1200 on a 1977 Ford Fiesta in 1995..... Jesus, some car to learn to drive with, no need for a key, a 2p coin worked just great, and if you were going to hard around a rh bend, the passenger door used to swing open.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,222 ✭✭✭robbie_998

it really sickens me when i see how much you all paid for insurance ... it has to be such a big scam !

anyways. my current one (and hopefully will only get cheaper)

me. on my own. 19 year old male fully comp. never insured before. 2007 1.4 honda civic with full license with breakdown assist and so on.

    grand total €1856.24

allianz wanted €6446.57 = i told there where to go with it :pac:
    aviva wanted €4116.18
    most places were like that

until i rang first ireland that were the first place to properly quote me with €2300.

then oul pat britton had beaten it which is who im with now.

    Asgard baby !
