 Hi! Your post has me a little confused. I'm going to presume you meant not on campus. :)

If you're looking for somewhere near enough to DCU you shouldn't have too much trouble. You could look on the Ballymun side around Wadelai Road or on the Collins Avenue side in any of the estates along Collin's Avenue. If you're willing to go a short bus ride or long walk away you could try areas like Phibsboro, Drumcondra or Glasnevin which are all slightly closer to town or Whitehall which is about a 10 minute walk from the college.

The student's union always compiles a list of accommodation nearby (houses for rent or people looking to house-share) so you could always contact them and see what they have. If you email education@dcusu.ie or go to the dcusu.ie site you should be able to get it fairly easily.

    Good Luck! :D

If you're coming to DCU & your top priority is the comfort of your living conditions then campus res might not be the best option, but imo it is definitely the best place to live (in first year at least) to get to know people. You're surrounded by lots of people in the same situation as you and it's easy to get involved in things as you're very close to everything.

To be honest the conditions are grand anyway - Larkfield is the most basic (individual bedrooms, sharing kitchen & bathroom with one other) but the others are all individual rooms, en suite in every room with shared living room for 5 people. If anything goes wrong maintenance people will sort it very quickly once reported and you don't have to worry about utility bills (which can be a big hassle of renting a house depending on the people you live with).

Campus are strict on some rules (such as the no guests after midnight unless they're signed in rule which can be annoying) but all in all I think it's the best place to live if you're moving up for the first time. Shanowen Square/Shanowen Hall or other similar private student apartment complexes are a similar kind of accommodation and also a good option.

It depends on your situation, if you've got friends moving up too or know people in the area then getting a house/apartment locally could work great too. It just makes it a lot easier to get to know the campus & people in it if you're living on campus or another student accommodation block, especially if you're coming not knowing anyone. You might find a nice house for cheaper than campus/other student accommodation but tbh in first year getting to know people is the most important thing - after that you've made your friends and you can go out looking for a house/apartment in the area with them.
